Charles Hayes Obituary

Mr. Charles Albert Hayes, 67 of Greensboro, died Sunday, July 21, 2002 in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2002 at Christ United Methodist Church with Reverend Stephen Haines officiating. Interment will be private at a later date.
Mr. Hayes was the Chairman of Guilford Mills, Inc., Past President of North Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association, The American Textile Manufacturers Institute, Southwest Farms and Ranch, Director of North Carolina Textile Foundation, also US Trust Company of NC.
He was formerly Past Chairman of Board of Trustees at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, member of Board of Overseers for Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, former Director of Guilford Technical Community College Foundation, former Director of North Carolina Textile Foundation, National 4-H Council-Resource Board and Former member of the Board of Trustees, former Chairman of the Board of Pavillon International Foundation. He was Honorary Chairman of Greater Greensboro Open Golf Tournament, Distinguished Citizen of the Year, National 4-H Council Gold Clover Award. A Chair at University of North Carolina at Greensboro, School of Business is named in his honor; he received the Distinguished Service Award 1992 from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the recipient of the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen Award in 1995, Textile Man of the Year 1998 - Textile World Magazine, was Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree - University of North Carolina at Greensboro 1998, Literacy Lion of the Year 1999-Reading Connections.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his children, Deborah M. Holbrook and her husband, Gary of McLeansville, Kimberly S. Hayes, David C. Hayes and his wife, Aleta of Greensboro, Matthew T. Hayes and his wife, Mary of Jamestown; father, Albert Hayes of Johnstown, NY; mother of his children, Ina M. Hayes; sisters, Colleen Daniel and her husband, James of Richmond, VA, Patricia Weaver and her husband, Robert, Jean Dalton and her husband, Mike of Myrtle Beach, SC, Elaine Hayes Scutt of Canjoharie, NY, Barbara Hayes of Greensboro; brothers, Gary Hayes and his wife, Nancy of Greensboro, Albert James Hayes of Johnston, NY; fiancee, Delores Gallagher; grandchildren, Shannon Burris and husband, Michael, Gary Holbrook and wife, Shelly, David S. Holbrook, Melanie Garner and husband, Glen, Charles R.W. Wagoner and wife, Julie, Krystyn A. Hayes, Matthew Ryan Hayes, Ina N. Hayes, Amber N. Hayes, Mary F. Puckett, Christopher R. Puckett; great-grandchild, Ethan T. Holbrook; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all over the world.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Wagoner Hayes, mother Mae Putman Hayes, and half-brother, Russell Hayes.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel on W. Friendly Ave., and also following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guilford College United Methodist Church, 1205 Fleming Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410; Duke Cancer Center, DUMC 3828, Durham, NC 27710; or Pavillon International, PO Box 189, Millspring, NC 28756.
