Charles Underwood Obituary

Charles Russell Underwood
Sanford
Charles Russell Underwood, age 81 passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Vernon Tyson officiating. Burial will follow at Farmville Community Cemetery in Sanford, NC. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home of Sanford.
He was born in Lee County, North Carolina on January 13, 1931, to the late James Redin and Floy Harrington Underwood. After graduating from Deep River School, Charlie entered the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Upon leaving the Marines, he embarked on what was to become a remarkable career in the water well drilling and pump industries, helping to provide many cities, towns, and industries with clean water. Even after retiring from the day-to-day operations of his company, Charlie continued to advise and inspire his employees.
Charlie was known for many things: his incredible work ethic, his belief in civic responsibility, and his willingness to help those in need. He was also known for his infectious smile, easy wit and love of good food. Charlie was an avid reader, particularly on his two favorite subjects, history and all things mechanical. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique trucks, tractors, and engines.
He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Shelby Wicker Underwood; his daughter Susan and husband Randy Stallings of Wake Forest; and son Russell and wife Carolyn Underwood of Sanford. Charlie is also survived by his sisters Nancy Hall and Shirley Hall and brother Waylon Underwood, all of Sanford. He was preceded in death by his brother, J.R. Underwood, Jr. Charlie also leaves behind friends, employees, and customers who will miss his ready smile, wealth of knowledge and helping hand.
The family would be pleased that contributions in Charlie's memory are made to: Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Plantation, PO Box 1398, Brookneal, VA,24528-9905 or to Duke Cancer Institute, Box 90581, Durham, NC 27708-0581 or to the charity of one's choice.
