Christopher Schonwalder Obituary

Christopher Otto Schonwalder passed away on January 27, 2026, just days shy of his 83rd birthday.

Chris was born on January 31, 1943, in the Bronx, New York, and raised in Queens. He was a first-generation American, the son of Otto and Edith Schonwalder, who escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna and arrived in the United States via Ellis Island in 1939. The opportunity and safety America provided to his family shaped Chris deeply. A profound patriotism and gratitude for a country that welcomed refugees and offered the chance to prosper were instilled in him from an early age and remained central to his identity throughout his life.

Chris enrolled in ROTC while in college and went on to earn his PhD from Penn State University. He served two years in the U.S. military during the Vietnam era, continuing a lifelong commitment to service. The majority of his professional career was spent serving his country and the global community in senior roles at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), a branch of the National Institutes of Health.

Through his work, Chris had the opportunity to travel extensively, visiting every continent and most countries around the world. His home reflected this global life-filled with objects ranging from small market finds to significant works of art, each tied to a place, a moment, and a story.

After retirement, Chris embarked on a second career that returned him to his true passion: photography. He became especially known for his dance photography and served for many years as a photographer for the North Carolina Ballet. His work captured movement, discipline, and grace-qualities he deeply admired.

Chris was also an avid tennis player and a dedicated member of the Raleigh Racquet Club, where 2026 marks his 50th year of membership.

Chris's second wife, Rebecca Strimer, was the love of his life. She passed away more than 25 years ago, and he never went a day without thinking of her. Though he carried on as best he could, he never truly moved on from that loss.

He lived fully, loved deeply, and was ready, even eager, to take his next existential steps, having experienced an extraordinarily rich and meaningful life.

He is survived by his son, Matthew; daughter-in-law, Laura; and his beloved grandchildren, Otto (20) and Olivia (18), both students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A celebration of life will be planned for early spring to occur in Raleigh, NC and made available virtually online as well. Details will be posted to his Facebook page in the coming weeks.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in his name to an organization that reflects his values and passions. These may include nonprofits such as WUNC, PBS, the North Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Museum of Art, scientific research foundations, or organizations that support returning science, reason, and empathy to public and political life.

Matthew, my name is Aida Doss Havel, and my husband John and I met your father at Unity Church of Raleigh in the early 2000s. I would bring my father, Dr. Albert Doss, to services with me in a wheelchair, and your father was always so gracious, kind, friendly, and supportive to me and my father. Although I have not seen Chris in many, many years, I will never forget his kindness and gentleness.

Chris was a long time tennis buddy and competitor. Some of my favorite memories of him come from our tournament tennis matches. His mixed doubles matches with Becky were hard fought, but with a lot of joy in the battle. He photographed for me office scenes and head shots for my law firm. So, we go back a long way in so many heartfelt ways.

I´ve knew Chris for many years through his love of photography. He, as well as his photos, were unforgettable. Chris had such an artistic mind, and now I´m learning was so much more than that. He and his lively spirit will be sorely missed!!

I met Chris at a party for the Chemistry graduate students at Penn State in 1966. It was my first week or so in graduate school while Chris was in his third year. He offered me a ride home and asked
me what my plans were at Penn State. When I told him I planned to go for my master´s degree, he
remarked, "why settle for the consolation prize when you have not even tried for the gold?" I agreed.
Although we had few interactions, I remember Chris helping me pass a course we were both taking by
tutoring me on the subject matter. When finals came, the class was given a choice of taking the test or
writing a paper. Several classmates, including me, opted to write a paper. I spent days in the library and every
time Chris saw me, he told me to take the test. The third time, he told me to stop banging my head against
the wall because the paper I was working on has recently been published as a review and convinced
me to take the test. He was right. I got a grade A- ! Classmates who submitted papers did not do as well.
Without Chris's advice during my first year, my current situation would have been different. Thank you,
Chris. May you rest in peace.

I enjoyed Chris as a member of our tai chi class at Springmoor and will miss his playful spirit and unbelievable knowledge of plays and music. I wish we could have known him longer. My deep sympathy to his family and loved ones.

I can not even begin to express the impact Chris had on my life in the short year that I knew him. He was a student in my Tai Chi class at Springmoor. He was a kind, engaging witty person who shared meaningful stories from his rich life. We connected deeply in regards to our compassion for theatre, dance, humankind, the environment and our democracy. I feel blessed to have known him and inspired by who he was deep down inside. He will be missed by me and our entire Tai Chi group. Rest in Peace Chris.
