He was born January 17, 1931, in Lumberton, to Clarence Guy Townsend and Mineana Woodall Townsend. A caring individual, he was a great husband, father and grandfather. Upon graduating from Lumberton High School, Clarence attended Georgia Tech and the University of North Carolina and, in 1951, he enlisted for four years in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War. He went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from North Carolina State University. Clarence accepted a position with Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut. In 1958, he met and married Shirley Aborn, to whom he was married for 51 years. They moved to West Palm Beach, FL, and then Clarence returned to North Carolina with his family and became a computer programmer for the Triangle Universities Computation Center (TUCC). He retired in 1987 from TUCC and moved to Clarksville, VA. Later the couple settled in Clayton, Clarence was active in the Presbyterian Church as an Elder and Stephen Minister. Clarence is survived by his wife, Shirley; his sons and their spouses, David and Lisa, and Danny and Robyn; and five grandchildren, who gave him great joy and love: Ty, Cory, Kaitlyn, Shelby, and Cassy. Clarence is also survived by his sister, Kendrick T. King of Denver, CO. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 at the Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and Stephen Minister. Aunt Shirley, our thoughts are with you and your family. We certainly enjoyed our visits with the "southern" branch of the family. I often think back to my visit in Florida back in 1959. Clarence will be missed. Bob and Carol

Dear Shirley -

Clarence meant so much to me during my 10 years working with him at TUCC. He was like a big brother and a great friend all rolled into a person who liked to "bark" but had a heart of gold. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Aunt Shirley, Dave, Danny and families,
We are so very sorry for your loss. We have such great memories of Uncle Clarence. He was so fun at family gatherings, especially when he used to tease Aunts Shirley, Doris and Grace. It was so great to see both Shirley and Clarence at Amy and Larry's wedding in April! You are all in our thoughts and prayers. May all of your fond memories help you at this time and in the future.
Love,
Kathy, Woody and Family

Dear Shirley, Cornelia and I were saddened to learn just a few days ago, through the TUCC network, about Clarence's sudden and serious illness. Our note to you and him, enclosing an old TUCC photo, including Clarence, may not have been delivered yet. We appreciated Clarence's obituary. We, too, are Presbyterians, and Stephen Ministers, and Leland is an Elder.

Shirley, please know that we will be praying for an outpouring of God's grace and love through His people near you to sustain you through this difficult time.

Love from Leland and Cornelia Williams

Aunt Shirley, David and Danny & to the entire Townsend family. I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Clarences' illness, and now his passing.Though we live our lives so very far from one another I want you all to know that you have always been in my thoughts. I will always remember the times we were able to get together, whether it was to get work done on the farm or just sitting back enjoying a meal together. David and Dan, do you remember where you and Audrey and I always ate Thanksgiving supper? On the staircase @ The Farm. I know you are all very sad right now, but Clarence/Dad will always live in your hearts and memories.
Love, Lin Aborn Corriveau and family

Wedding Day

Patty Aborn

October 28, 2009

Uncle Clarence you came into our lives just over 50 years ago - the Southern Boy marrying our Aunt Shirley a Connecticut Yankee from the green valley of Ellington Connecticut. We welcomed you into our family and loved you from day one. All those family reunions with cousins David and Danny were so special in the Aborn family when you all came back to Ellington. We will miss you so very much.
God Bless You
Love Patty and John Schlag and family
