Constance Battle Obituary

Dr. Constance Battle, M.D.

August 9, 1955 - October 27, 2020

Raleigh

Dr. Battle knew from an early age that she was born to be a physician. She believed that being an OB/GYN specialist was her calling, not just her profession. She enjoyed farming, reading science fiction and fantasy, attending recitals and concerts, listening to sacred music, watching movies, singing, attending Broadway theatrical performances and traveling across the world. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Anyone who knew Dr. Battle also knew that she was a person of deep faith. She drew great strength from sharing prayers, sacred verses, as well as attending Bible Studies.

With robust spirit, Dr. Battle leaves behind siblings, The Rev. Carmen Battle-Mumford, JD, The Rev. Michael Battle, Ph.D., Brother-in-law Rev. Jack Mumford, and Sister-in-law Dr. Rachael Battle, Ph.D.; four nieces and nephew, Khadija Mumford, Mesha Mumford, Sage Battle, Bliss Battle, Zion Battle, extended family, female patients, and many friends. Most importantly, Dr. Battle leaves behind thousands of babies that she delivered as a medical doctor who are now contributing their gifts and talents to their communities and even the world.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Battle will have a private memorial; however, her public memorial will occur online on November 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. The specific link to attend will be posted on www.michaelbattle.com on November 28, 2020.

I am so sad to learn of Dr. Battle's passing! I Googled her name to see if I could get back on her calendar. She saw me through two babies, two miscarriages and cancer. She will forever hold a special place in my heart. The world lost giant the day she passed!

I LOVED Dr. Battle. I moved to Raleigh in 1999, 5 months pregnant, and Dr. Battle accepted me as a patient until she retired. I LOVED going to my appointments because she and I would talk for an hour about any and everything, before my exam :) I just found out today that she passed. I am heartbroken. When she retired, before the office officially closed, I went by one afternoon to retrieve my records, and unbeknownst to me, there she was on the parking lot. I jumped out my car and ran to hug her! :) I told her how glad it was to see her, and she said that she was glad to be seen. This was my first inclination that she had not been well. I thank God that I got to hug her outside of her office that day :)

I am heartbroken to learn of Dr. Battle's passing. Just 3 days ago, my daughter and I found a picture of Dr. Battle holding my daughter in the delivery room. She has who that was and I told her her name and said was a great doctor she was. I had no idea at that moment she was gone. RIP to a wonderful lady.

What a wonderful Doctor my OBGYN. I recall during my delivery of my second child Caroline Lee Fritts that she sat at the foot of my bed for hours waiting for Caroline to arrive. At 2:30 am she came to my side side said " we have to do another C section, I know this is not what you want but I will do what is best for this baby ....... agree? Yes mam I will do whatever for my 2nd born to live. " She sat at my bedside for hours....... I can still see her face when I close my eyes. Fast forward...... 23 years later I fondly recall Dr. Battle holding my daughter and calling her "my lovie" This was her baby as well as mine. To this day I call my precious little Shih Tzu named Saylor "my Lovie" Her memory lives on and on and on in my soul. What an amazing lady that has gone to a better place. I will see her again one day. I'm truly blessed to have known her and her deliver my 2nd born child.

I am so thankful to have known her, if it had not been for her gift my granddaughter would not be here. Her name suited her well because she went to battle for her patients. Now she has her wings and is resting in the arms of God. She will truly be missed.

Dr. Battle, I fondly remember when you were my doctor. You were strong and talked to me not only as a doctor but woman to woman about not overdoing for others but taking care of myself as well. You said, "tell those folks around your house to get up and do something, you need to heal!" When you extended my time out of work I heard you loud and clear! I just loved you and there's not another like you! Rest in Peace Dr. Battle!

Dr. Battle served as a beacon of light for women and woman's health in the Triangle. While her specialty was obstetrics and gynecology, as one of her patients I received the most comprehensive annual visits one could ever experience. She would then proceed to refer you to a resource that would be astounded that the referral came from a gynecologist. She treated the whole person in her practice. One of her greatest skills was that she listened and engaged her patients in the design of the treatment plan. I was pleased to have experience her care giving model.

We often discussed working in health care in South Africa. We would discuss what could be accomplished for populations with limited access to health care. She was a true visionary.

From the moment I walked into Dr. Battle's office when she was located off Dresser Court, I knew she was the right OB-GYN for me. Her passion for delivering babies and caring for the Mom-to-Be was top notch! There was never a time that I went to see her after the birth of my son in 1992, that she didn't ask about him or want to know "where was a picture for her wall". The love for her profession showed in all she did for her patients. Heaven has received a very special angel. My prayers for Gods healing comfort go out to her family.
