Dale Hoover Obituary

Dale M. Hoover passed away on November 4, 2025, after six days in hospice and just two months short of his 95th birthday. He was a longtime Raleigh resident, however raised on the farm near Oskaloosa, in Southeast Iowa. Among his family's first generation to pursue higher education, he earned his undergraduate degree at Iowa State. Next, being a Quaker, before graduate school, he spent more than two years in Palestine (1955-1957), working for the American Friends Service Committee at Ramallah Friends School, where he taught agricultural science.

Returning with a Danforth Fellowship, he studied at the University of Chicago. Nearing Ph.d completion, he moved to Raleigh in September 1959 with wife Jean and two small children in tow, joining the Economics faculty at NCSU. This was to be the setting of his entire professional career, UC Davis sabbatical aside.

He had a 36-year career in the Economics & Business department, tenured in 1963, serving as head from 1981 to 1990, and joining the agricultural econ department until retirement in 1995. Subsequently, he remained in his west Raleigh home until 2022.

A central aspect of his private life was his more than 60 years of service with Raleigh Friends Meeting (Quakers), filling functional roles and helping to steer growth, from a start in borrowed space, to on-campus services, and eventually construction of their own sanctuary.

His passing was preceded by those of his teenage son, Reid, in 1977, and his wife of 50 years, Jean, in 2006, leaving behind son Daniel (Rita Sadhvani), daughter Ann (Randy Alley), five grandchildren, Miranda, and Hoovers Rebecca* (Andrei, their children Oriana and Giovanni), Alexander (Ned), Surabhi and Kartik.

Dale will be interred among six generations of family outside hometown Oskaloosa, where his farming family had settled in the 1840s.

Family, and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Friends Meeting of Raleigh, on December 14th at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Friends Meeting of Raleigh, 625 Tower St., Raleigh, NC 27607 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Khaled from Bangladesh sent condolences I have not seen post. In the early days of Covid, I suggested he send some research on supply chains to Dale, who helped him refine it for publication. Khaled is London School of Economics through the extension program.

I was introduced to Mr. Hoover around 2011 thru my significant other John Owen. John and Dale had been friends for many years. I found Mr. Hoover to be a very kind, caring, gentlemen who thought a lot of his family. I enjoyed the few conversations we had when John and I visited Dale at his home in Raleigh. I feel Dale is at peace and thankful he did not linger. Sincere condolences to all of Dales family and friends. A good soul. He will be greatly missed.

I met Dale at Raleigh Friends and always enjoyed his sweet, calm manner and occasional insights shared during meeting for worship. A lovely man, he will be much missed.

Dale was my oldest friend and his son Reid was a friend. We talked about those teenage years some and his childhood as well not many months ago. I last talked to him when he was in a near coma the day before he died much as we usually would and have no doubt he listened. I know his influence continues and I would not say he is gone, only that he can't talk back anymore.
