Daniel Humphries Obituary

Daniel Glenn "Danny" Humphries

DEcember 3, 1952 - December 1, 2016

Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem – Daniel Glenn "Danny" Humphries, age 63, died Thursday, December 1, 2016 in Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Born December 3, 1952 in Wilson County, he was a son of the late William S. "Bill" Humphries and Faye Batten Humphries Powell. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ethel Brown Batten; brothers, David Humphries and William Batten "Billy" Humphries; uncle, Al Batten, aunt, Reba Batten Bone. Danny attended Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Kenly and Ridgewood Baptist Church in Raleigh. He was an avid reader that enjoyed going to his favorite bookstores once a week as long as he was able.

Danny was a fun-loving guy who in his prime spent a great deal of his free time "rambling" on Hillsborough Street. He was a regular patron of the Readers Corner and would spend several hours each week looking through the stacks of used books. He would visit the comic book stores, record stores, and other shops along the way. Danny was also an avid fan of the music scene in Raleigh. He received his first guitar lesson from former Ember's guitarist and vocalist, Jackie Gore. For a very long time in the 70's and 80's, he probably saw every act that passed through the Brewery, which was located next to the NCSU campus and was a popular venue for new bands. He would inevitably finish his evenings with a sandwich at Sadlack's Heroes and he felt a great kinship with many of the patrons and employees he met while there. He never let an evening pass on Hillsborough Street without paying his respects to the many Raleigh Police Officers who worked in their off-duty hours providing security at various locations.

Danny loved life and he was friend to many and he was always respectful of his elders. Those who knew him were always greeted with a smile and his quick wit would often astound. He had to move to Winston-Salem upon the passing of his step-father, but he returned to his beloved Raleigh as often as possible until the ravages of aging began to take its inevitable toll. Danny passed in his sleep after suffering unexpected complications resulting from aneurysm surgery.

Surviving are his sister, Nancy Crawford; uncle, Glenn Batten and wife Stephanie; nieces, Margaret Potter, Angela Nobers, Christina Lovell, and Kimberly Crawford; nephew, Mitchell Humphries; and great nieces, Natalie Nobers and Emma Potter.

Oh Danny...I'm so sorry to hear that you have left us. And sorrier still that it has been so long since our paths crossed. You never failed to make me smile and feel valued as a friend in over forty years.

I will carry your humor, your music and your "evil" laugh with me always. And perhaps, in the end, we'll meet again..

And to Nancy and other surviving family, my deepest sympathies. Your brother was truly one of a kind. A kind and gentle spirit who will be remembered fondly.

Love, Karen

One of the most colorful personalities that anyone could encounter. Danny's wit and humor always made life rich. His legacy lives among many. Thank you Danny for enriching my life and so many others. You set a standard to live life by playing all the music that God put in you.

oh no, he and I had some stories for sure, since I also was in these sane venues in the 80's and some 90's ...and happened to catch him once in Raleigh just passing thru at Sadlack's when I came back there in Dec 2011 after Mom passed ....R.I.P.

Danny was an amazing person, he would always make me laugh. I was always so excited when he would come and visit. Or when I would get the chance to visit him. Danny will forever be in my heat.
