Dexter Joyner Obituary

Dexter Carvie Joyner
Zebulon
Dexter Carvie Joyner, 87, of 9409 Golfside Drive, passed away Friday, April 5, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Zebulon, April 8, 1925 to Edgar Joyner and Dona Gay Joyner into a large and proud family.
Dexter served his country with the Merchant Marines during WWII in the Pacific campaign. His professional path spanned many different careers: fireman on the railroad, US Postal service, private business owner, Magistrate in Nash County and the last 15 years as an electronic and computer engineering teacher at Wake Technical College. Dexter always involved himself in activities and causes that were a reflection of the need to serve others. He was Chairman of the Nash County Democratic Party, volunteering for the Meals of Wheels Program and long standing member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh serving a Docent, usher and Lay Eucharist Minister.
Continuing his desire to serve others, after retirement Dexter took an active role with AARP. He was a member of the AARP State Legislative Team & State Advocacy Council. Team member on the Coast-to-Coast Bus Tour on Medicare benefits, speaking on the Capitol steps in Lincoln, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado. He also represented NC at the national convention on the Volunteer Engagement Program, served as a member of the AARP Speakers Bureau addressing churches and senior groups across Eastern North Carolina and 4th Congressional District Coordinator for the VOTE Program. In addition to AARP, Dexter was a counselor with the Senior Health Insurance Program.
He had a true love for the game of golf. This led to building a home on the golf course in Zebulon winning numerous club flight championships and attending classes in Austin, Texas to earn the ranking as a Registered Professional Golf Club Maker. Dexter took part in the Wake County Senior games, receiving seven gold, two silver and one bronze at the young age of 82.
Dexter was a member of the Wake County Shrine Club and a 32nd Degree Mason in the Masonic Order. His interest in electronics started early and he became a registered Ham Radio Operator.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Donald Joyner and deceased wife, Alva Wiggs Joyner.
Dexter left a caring and close family: loving wife, Wanda Grose Fish Joyner and children, Dexter C. "Woody" Joyner, Jr. and wife, Chris of Raleigh; Jean F. Riggins and husband, Tom of Garner; Patti F. Shaffer of Zebulon; Samuel Fish, Jr. and wife, Mary of Wendell, Michael Joyner of Raleigh and Donna F. Mintz and husband, Ed of Wendell. Along with 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Our world has lost a truly remarkable man…. WE LOVE YOU POP.

I have fond memories of Dexter, first as a child in Richmond VA and later at Mother Dot's and Aunt Deanie's house. I know he and my Dad, Harold V Joyner were close as cousins. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

Wanda and family -- my heart is full with memories of Dexter as an AARP volunteer. I remember so clearly how much he loved being part of the Voter Express bus tour to make people aware of the need to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. And he so richly deserved to be recognized with AARP's Andrus Award for his outstanding community service efforts. He was one of a kind, and we miss him.
