I just found out that my uncle, who I've only met when I was 14 passed away. I just spoke to him in September and wanted to make plans to come and meet him this summer. I just am thankful I got to talk to him for the hour I did. I hope one of his daughters can contact me. My deepest sympathy. Gina L NDong Engohang

I reached out to Dr Kloe from time to time, but not lately. Something I saw on the train from Barcelona to Zaragoza yesterday reminded me of him. He always had exotic food menus on display in his classroom. I remember seeing gazpacho on the menu once and thinking, in a typically unrefined and unexposed way, yuck, cold soup. Later when I actually tried gazpacho, I got it: it doesn't have to be consistent with your experience (Brunswick stew) to have merit. The railway was serving gazpacho in the service car on the train and I intended to relay this anecdote to Dr Kloe. Sadly, I was three weeks too late.

Don Kloe taught me high school Spanish in 1986 and 1987 in a rural public high school in Franklinton NC. I didn't get it then. But he opened my eyes. I graduated with honors from Maryland Law and Harvard, and served 22 years in the Marine Corps visiting 35 countries. That's the world Don Kloe opened for me -- that there was a big world beyond our small town.
I looked up Don to send him a message because I'm sitting -- right now -- in Zaragosa Spain. I work for NATO now. Zaragosa is halfway between Barcelona and Madrid. I wanted to drop him a note to let him know I'm fumbling through my high school Spanish but I retained enough to navigate here, check into my hotel, order dinner and a beer, and generally get by! I hope I didn't disappoint him as a student. He had so much more to give us but at age 16 we didn't know to take it. God bless you Don. Malo, malo, pal.

Karen and the extended family of Donald Kloe, our prayers and condolences to you. As you stated, Don made it to 90 years old. Don was a very gracious, welcoming person and a 'gentleman's gentleman'. Sharon and I were very taken when we read that he died. Don welcomed us to Sons Of Norway lodge and was so kind and gracious in welcoming Sharon and making us feel at ease and at home. Don and I had excellent discussions and may I say that he affected both Sharon and myself far beyond what words could say. He affected positively many people as the different entries in this guest book will tell you. Let me pass on to you what a 'retired minister' told me five years ago: You can talk to Don anytime, any place. At night works quite well as few people are out. Remember the good times and memories of your father, teacher and supporting person. He is in an excellent place and all of us will have our memories of Don. Rest in Peace - Don. Have peace in your family - Karen and your extended family. From: Norm and Sharon

My deepest condolences to your family.... Dr. Kloe not only taught me Spanish, he taught me to LOVE Spanish! After high school, I took more than the required number of foreign-language courses at UNC because he showed me how much fun it was to learn more and more.

You never have enough time with those you love and truly admire. Don was one of the kindest and most gentle men that we ever knew. We were blessed by having known him and will forever be indebted for his being our mentor in so many ways. We will treasure both his wise counsel and the memories he gave us. And those memories include the many ones made with our dear Mama Woodie as we laughed while reliving her many travels with him, Vivian, Myrtle Jones, Ed Weston and many other Civitan friends. What a group! But more than anything else I will always cherish the steadfast care and comfort he gave Mama Woodie in her last few years. I don't know how to capture my sincere appreciation except by trying to live the virtues which he demonstrated. I pray that he now receives the rewards that I could never have repaid him here on earth. Thanks Karen and Patricia and other family members for sharing him with us. Our heartfelt sympathy is with you. We hope it is some comfort to you to remember that he will live forever in the memories of so many people. We are better people having been with him, and Heaven will be a happier place with him being there. I'm betting the partying is already in full swing with all our loved ones up there!

Don was an American hero who was at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a good friend to many, including me. Professor, teacher, genealogist, linguist in several languages, father, grandfather, beachgoer, fine diner, gym goer, and more. He lived a full and fascinating life. Many of us will miss him dearly and greatly. He will not be forgotten. Well done Don. I will see you upstairs Pal. Sincerely, Bob Valois
