Dr. Douglas MacArthur Russell

Morehead City

Dr. Douglas MacArthur Russell, 72, of Morehead City, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 16th.

He was born on February 15, 1942 in Dover, NC, to Lucille Fordham and Lawrence McCabe Russell.

Doug attended early schooling in Dover and graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1963 and UNC School of Medicine in 1967, where he was a member of the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society. He completed an internship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL and continued surgical training at NC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. Surgical residency was completed at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.

He married Mary Carolyn Barnes of Winterville on June 19, 1967. They enjoyed a 47-year loving marriage filled with thought provoking discussions about global events and politics.

He served a two-year tour of duty with the United States Air Force during which he served as chief of professional services at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Hospital. Dr. Russell began his practice as a board-certified surgeon in Goldsboro with Dr. Ralph Bland. He later affiliated with Eastern Carolina Surgical Associates during which time he served as President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer of the Wayne Memorial Hospital medical staff and Chairman of the Department of Surgery 1981-1982. Dr. Russell also served as a member of the Bylaws Committee, Cancer Committee, Ethics Committee and Institutional Review Board. Dr. Russell was known for his dedication to his patients and his gratitude for the nurses and support personnel at the hospital. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his friends at Bill Moore's Pool Hall.

After his retirement in September 2007, he moved to Morehead City with Carolyn where he pursued his love of sailing his Flying Scot, supervised the famous July 4th Slip-N-Slide and watched the birds and boats from his deck on Bogue Sound. He was also a charter member of the Sound Drive Yacht and Drinking Club.

Dr. Russell is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Hilda Russell Ricks. He is survived by his wife and three children, Susannah Russell Washburn and husband, Jess, of Greensboro, Douglas McCabe Russell and wife, Nicole, of Raleigh, and Meredith Russell Anglin and husband, Trey, of Charlotte. His surviving siblings are Frances Russell Salt of La Grange, Leonard Maxwell Russell of Greensboro, Ruth Russell Prunski of Durham, Gene Austen Russell of Nashville, TN and Curtis Ray Russell of Jacksonville.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, October 25th at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Morehead City where he was a member. The Rev. Joseph Franklin will officiate. Following the service, there will be a reception at the family's home.

Mrs. Carolyn and family, I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Russells illness and then his passing. I worked with him at ECSA and admired him so much as my mentor and friend. I nicknamed him the road runner because when he hit those doors it was non-stop. He had such a compassion for his patients and staff. You have been and will remain in my prayers. May God shower you with peace and comfort. Cindy

Prayers for comfort to the Russell family.
I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Russell for many years in the operating room. His knowledge, skill, & speed helped many patients. As a member of the surgical team if you were willing to learn, he was ready & willing to teach. I learned alot from him. In addition to the clinical aspect, we also discussed politics. Several of us would help post flyers & put out signs prior to the elections. Even though he isn't here physically, his legacy lives on in many ways!!!

I enjoyed working as a scrub nurse with Dr. Russell way back in the 80's at WMH. I can remember how frustrated he would get with right handed instruments and everyone would rush to find his own trays! I admired his expertise and counted on him when the time came that I needed a surgeon. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.
