It is with a spirit of gratitude and love that we celebrate the life of Edward Hampton Bailey, 73, who passed away on August 31, 2025, in Baltimore, MD. A man whose legacy is one of love, loyalty and friendship, Ed's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held for Ed at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the Ivy Community Center, 4222 Fayetteville Road, Durham, NC 27713.
Born on February 12, 1952, in Philadelphia, PA, Ed was the beloved son of Carolyn Hampton and Edward Bailey. He grew up on Clearview Street in Germantown, a tight-knit community where he fostered lifelong friendships that remained strong throughout his life. Ed's journey took him to Fisk University in Nashville, TN, where he met his college sweetheart, Jocelyn Hunter. Together, they navigated college life, majored in Sociology, and became active voices for social justice. Ed's college years were just the beginning of what would become a rich legacy of lifelong friendships. He was an enthusiastic participant in the Fisk Alumni Association and cherished reconnecting with friends and classmates, particularly at reunions, including his 50th reunion in 2023.
Ed and Jocelyn's marriage marked the beginning of a beautiful life together in Durham, NC, where Ed's unwavering commitment to both his family and community began. For over 30 years, Ed worked at Duke Hospital, where he started as a pharmacy technician and advanced to become the Assistant Director of Duke Hospital Pharmacy. Ed's business acumen was also integral in the successful implementation of SAP, which streamlined administrative processes for the university. His work was not just a job, but a reflection of his dedication to supporting his family and improving the lives of those around him. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Ed's family meant everything to him. He and Jocelyn raised two children who carry with them the lessons of love and wisdom Ed shared. His passion for discovering and preserving his family history became a treasured part of his life, ensuring that future generations would stay connected to their roots. Through his leadership role in the Hampton Family Reunion Committee, Ed helped organize family gatherings every two years, fostering connections that will endure for generations.
A man of deep loyalty and generosity, Ed also dedicated himself to bettering his community. As a member of the James E. Shepard Sertoma Club, Ed held several leadership roles, including treasurer, president, and chairman of the board. His work championed the cause of the hearing-impaired, and he was instrumental in raising significant funds through the NFL Monday Night Raffle, ensuring that many individuals had access to affordable hearing aids.
Known for his deep voice, infectious smile, and good-natured humor, Ed was an enthusiastic Philadelphia Eagles fan who enjoyed spirited rivalries, especially with his son-in-law, a Dallas Cowboys fan. One of Ed's fondest memories was attending Super Bowl LVII on his birthday with his son, creating a moment of joy and connection that will be remembered forever.
Ed's family and friends will carry forward his legacy of love, integrity, and service to others. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 50 years, Jocelyn, daughter Keisha Bailey Garvin (William), son Kory Bailey, grandchildren Alexander, Hunter and Sam Bailey, and Niya Garvin, his sisters Chervon (Cherie) Bailey-McCoy and Sakina Bailey, his extended family, including nephew Tony McCoy, nieces Maria McCoy and Kim Bryant, and a host of close friends and loved ones. Ed's life was a testament to the power of love, loyalty, and community. While we will miss him deeply, we find comfort in knowing that his wisdom, compassion, and joy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
