Edward Caruolo Obituary

Edward Vitangelo Caruolo

Raleigh

On June 13, 2016, Ed passed away at his Raleigh home. Born November 1, 1931 in RI, he was the first child of the late Antonio Caruolo and late Emma Baldoni Caruolo. His only sibling was Robert Caruolo (deceased).

In 1953, he married Alice Villanis Caruolo. She preceded him in death earlier this year.

Ed is survived by sons, Doug, Gary, Eddie and Paul and six grandchildren.

Ed earned a B.S. from the University of RI (1953), a M.S. from University of Connecticut (1955) and his Ph.D. in 1963 from the University of Minnesota.

In 1963, Ed, now Dr. Caruolo, joined NCSU as an Assistant Professor in Animal Science. He retired in 1998 as a highly regarded Professor. Ed made many contributions, particularly in his research into the physiology of lactation, working to develop the electronics and computer needs for measuring, recording and analyzing mammary physiology parameters associated with the milking machine. He was nationally recognized for his work on mastitis and served as a Director of the National Mastitis Council. For much of his career, he taught a graduate course in Experimental Animal Physiology. In the 1980s, he also began teaching a new course, "Microcomputers in Animal Production," demonstrating his passion for bringing technology to the farm.

Ed served as an official for the Southeastern U.S. Masters track and field meets. He ran the Accutrack camera and was appreciated for his expertise.

As the Animal Science's departmental representative to the NCSU Libraries, he helped shape the library collection. He also served on and chaired the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB).

A private family celebration of Ed's life will be held in RI later this year.

Hello Doug, Gary, Eddie, Paul, and families. Though I did not get to know you personally, I wanted to let you know that as a young faculty member in the Department of Animal Science at NC State University, I very much appreciated your Dad. Ed's smile was contagious and his positive attitude often lifted the morale of the department. It must have been a shock to lose both parents within a a few months and I know that you must miss both of them very much. May you find comfort in many treasured family memories.
