Edward Isbell Obituary

Edward Mattox Isbell

Fuquay-Varina

Edward Mattox Isbell, Ed, 95, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 30, 2016. A visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in the Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Fuquay-Varina followed by a 3:00 p.m. Graveside service at the Willow Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ed was born July 15, 1921 in Lenior, NC to the late Carl and Ila Harris Isbell. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Katherine Moore and Jewel Gregg; and grandson, Eddie Isbell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Billie Triplett Isbell; his sons, Chuck (wife, Judy), and Steve (wife, Anne Marie); grandchildren, Brandon (wife, Julie), Dustin, Eric, Stephanie, and great-grandsons, John & Eddie.

Ed was a WWII veteran and a sergeant in the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Sgt. Isbell jumped into Normandy France and was captured on June 11. He spent the remaining days of the war as a prisoner of war. Sgt. Isbell was awarded the bronze star and purple heart as a result of his heroic actions during the D-Day campaign.

Ed moved to Raleigh in 1940 as a printer for the Raleigh Times and the News & Observer newspapers and retired in 1981. He was an active member of the Western Blvd Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, serving as member of the Board of Deacons. In 1987, he and Billie moved to their lake house on Kerr Lake, NC. In 2008, they moved to Fuquay-Varina, NC where they would be closer to family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, camping/RV'ing; and most of all, spending time with his family.

My father, George Smudin Sr. was a POW with Mr Isbell and always spoke about him. I found a short story on line a long time ago written by Mr Isbell that mentioned my father. May he Rest In Peace

We want to express our sincere condolences to the Isbell family at the loss of Mr. Isbell.
I had the pleasure of becoming friends with him while researching another WWII paratrooper veteran.
Mr. Isbell personified the "Greatest Generation". He honorably served his nation during WWII as a Paratrooper assigned to Company "E", 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. Mr. Isbell rose to the rank of Sergeant and was a qualified paratrooper and radio section chief.
Mr. Isbell parachuted into Normandy, France with the 82nd Airborne Division on June 6th, 1944 and was captured by the Germans on June 11th. He spent the rest of the war performing hard manual labor in a German POW camp.
Mr. Isbell was liberated in May 1945 and returned home shortly there after. He contemplated a career in the US Army but decided his calling lead elsewhere.
Thanks, Ed, for your friendship, fellowship, and kindness to a stranger seeing information about your military career. Rest in peace, my friend.
