Eng-Shang Huang Obituary

Eng-Shang Huang

March 17, 1940 - May 27, 2018

Chapel Hill

Eng-Shang "Clark" Huang of Chapel Hill passed away peacefully in his home on May 27 following a protracted illness at the age of 78.

Dr. Huang was born in Chiayi, Taiwan to Rong-Shun and King-Fa Huang. After earning BS and MPH degrees at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, he emigrated to the United States in 1968 to attend graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his PhD in microbiology and immunology in 1971 and remained at UNC to complete a post-doctoral fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Pagano, eventually joining the faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the UNC School of Medicine. He was a founding member of the Lineberger Cancer Research Center, where he was a pioneer in the areas of cytomegalovirus and antiviral research and served as Program Leader of the Virology Program from 1978 to 1991.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Huang served on committees for the National Institutes of Health and the Taiwanese National Health Research Institute. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in Research from the National Taiwan University School of Public Health in 1992.

With over 35 years of service at UNC, Dr. Huang retired in 2007 as a Professor of Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology, and Genetics. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, gardening, stamp collecting, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He continued to make frequent trips overseas to teach and work in China and his native Taiwan.

Dr. Huang is survived by his wife, Shu-mei Huong, his two sons, Dr. David Huang (Hsiupei) and Dr. Benjamin Huang (Anne), both faculty members of the UNC School of Medicine, and four grandchildren, Emma, Jay, Dylan, and Kara. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Eng-Shan Huang of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Dr. Huang to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (https://unclineberger.org/waystohelp/giving/memorial-honor).
