I have just discovered this Obituary for Dr. Ward. From 1963 - 1965 I was a student in Radiologic Technology at Southeastern General Hospital in Lumberton and was within one month of graduating from the Program. I had been having a problem with a discharge from my belly button and one day while in the operating room changing for a surgical case Dr Ward happened to be in the room at the same time. I told him my concerns and he just said show me. After his examination he said you have an umbilical cyst and a hernia. I will schedule you for surgery next week. Do you prefer any day. After getting over the shock I told him anytime will be ok. Needless to say the surgury was a complete success and he never sent me a bill. Being a student I couldn't afford to pay anyway and I have never forgotten his kindness and think of him every time I see the tiny scar at my belly button. He was a great man and highly respected by all the students and was always patient and kind to us when ever we were assigned to one of his surgical cases. I will never forget him.

First of all, let me say that D.E. was my idol.He was an icon to which all physicians should strive to emulate.I told him this many times over the years.Beyond this though , he was a constant . He served his Lord and his fellow man and was the epitome of a life well lived. Rest in peace D.E., I miss you already.

I cannot imagine a world without Dr. Ward in it but know that he is in Heaven. God needed help and he knew just the man for the job. He touched so many lives in Robeson County and beyond in so many ways. He will be missed by all who knew him.

He was and will always be my hero. I was honored to work for him for 32 years. I manage a surgery office today and I give Dr Ward all the credit for my choosing to continue to work now for 48 years. I learned from him how to work with integrity and gratitude. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by so many. .
