Dr. Euclid Murden Hanbury Jr.

Euclid Hanbury Obituary

Dr. Euclid Murden Hanbury, Jr. died at The Keep, his home in Orange County, VA, on Friday, February 20, 2009, at the age of 82.
A native of Portsmouth, VA he was the elder son of Blanche Conwell and Euclid Murden Hanbury.
He attended the Virginia Military Institute and Hampden-Sydneys College before entering the V12 program at Duke University.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he received his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Virginia in 1952 as well as a Master of Science in Surgery. Dr. Hanbury completed his internship in medicine and surgery at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada and earned a fellowship in physiology at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He returned to the University of Virginia for his residence in surgery; after eight years of residency training, he was certified by the American Board of Surgery and taught briefly at the University.
Dr. Hanbury then returned to Portsmouth where he was clinical director of the former Portsmouth General Hospital and was responsible for establishing the extensive outpatient clinics there, the residency program, the isotope unit, and the renal dialysis service.
In 1969 he was lured to Maine and established an active practice of surgery in Belfast until 1982 when he assumed the directorship of the Emergency Medical Services of the Waldo County General Hospital until his retirement in 1994. He served as president of the Maine Medical Association in 1975-76 and of the Medical Care Development, Inc. from 1979-82. He was a member of numerous professional societies including the New York Academy of Science, MENSA, and the American Rocket Society. He was the author of several papers that have been published in various medical journals.

Dr. Hanbury was an active sailor in Maine waters and an avid golfer. He was passionate about opera and choral music, and voracious about reading that in his declining years was a great joy together with his extensive bonsai collection displayed in his Zen garden at his residence in Orange.

Euclid definitely was one of a kind. I will always smile when i think of his stories and jokes and his passion for ANYTHING he set his mind to do ;). What started as a business relationship about 8 years ago, turned into a GREAT friendship i will always cherish and sorely miss. May he find rest and peace. Blessings to all who knew and loved him, the world lost a great man!

I will very much miss my friend Euclid. I feel privileged to have known him in his retirement in Virginia. He was one of a kind and a very good kind.

In our 14 years in ME, my path crossed with Euclid's as we sang in the Coller Chorale, as we read poetry with the Penobscot Readers, sharing our enjoyment of G/S in a duet from "Yeomen of the Guard". He was a real Renaissance man. It's an honor to call him friend and Bob and I shall miss him.

Euclid Hanbury, Jr. …intellectually gifted and complicated man, a surgeon, a father, a southerner and a sailor. He had a deep appreciation of the written and spoken word. His passions were music, books and the sea. He sailed the East coast from the Chesapeake to the Bay of Fundy. One of his favorite times on board (Windrift, Nova and Pilgrim) was when the day was done, the hook was set, the steaks were on the grill, and the scotch was poured. He was a good shipmate and above all, a good friend. Michael W. Crowley

Farewell my dear old friend. Your passing has been a real shock to me. You were one of a kind, a gentleman and a scholar.

Big Luke was my surgical mentor and kept me on the and narrow when I came to town. It took a while to get used to that tidewater Virginia accent where "about" rhymes with loot, not lout. He's the only person I ever knew who read more than I did. You never wanted to hint to him that redheads bled worse (or freckled worse) than others. There are still a few around (not me) who remember the celebration party he and Andy Gay threw when Brotman left town. It is the stuff of legend. We in Belfast will get together and celebrate his memory with several fingers of Glenlivet.

Many fond memories of my friend, "Euc". He taught me much about emergency medicine during his days in Belfast at WCGH. As a Citadel grad we
exchanged many "war stories" about The Citadel and VMI. He had a profound impact on my life. Will miss him.

Rest in peace, my fellow veteran.
