Gail Marzluff Obituary

Gail Dodge Marzluff
September 8, 1945 - May 28, 2021
Hillsborough, North Carolina - Gail Dodge Marzluff passed away on May 28, 2021 in Hillsborough, NC at age 75. Gail Charlotte Dodge was born in East Boothbay, Maine on September 8, 1945. She grew up there and graduated with her class of 30 students from Boothbay Regional High School in 1963. In the summer during high school she was a mate on a deep sea fishing boat. She joined the U.S. Army nursing program from 1963-1965, and then worked as an LPN at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. She married William "Bill" Marzluff in 1967. Their daughter, Elaine, was born in 1967 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and their son, James, in 1970 in Durham, NC. She raised her family in Tallahassee, FL where they lived from 1974-1991, before moving to Hillsborough, NC in 1991. Gail developed an interest in genealogy (before the internet), and tracked down her family history from original sources in New England. On visits to England she visited the original (1500's) Dodge House in Southport England, and found distant cousins who she has kept up with ever since. She never lost her love for the Maine coast; visiting with her family at least once a year, usually with a trip to Monhegan Island. She visited most of the lighthouses along the Maine Coast, and had a memorable trip to Machias Seal Island to spend a day with the puffins. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron of the Tallahassee 119 Chapter. She was an avid bowler, competed in the National Bowling Tournament for more than 30 years, and in the British Open 3 times. She served on the Board of Directors for the Tallahassee Bowling Association and later for the Durham Bowling Association.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years; her daughter Elaine of Grinnell, IA; two sisters, Joyce Dodge Cantell of Bath, ME and Sharon Dodge Riley of Woodbridge, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her son James predeceased her. Arrangements are with Walker's Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton St. Hillsborough, NC. A private family gathering is planned at a later date. Donations can be made in Gail's memory to the COPD Foundation or the National Audobon Society Puffin Project.

Conversations with Gail, her laughter and her smile are things I will miss. I first met Gail in Alice and Bill Marzluff's garden in Connecticut at a family picnic when she and my cousin first got together. I had the privilege of getting to know her while we were both visiting in Cocoa, Florida when we walked together on the beach. I never thanked her for the kindness she showed to my parents. She listened attentively to my father's stories and offered to edit his memoirs. Gail had a wonderful way with elderly people and was a very thoughtful person.
My condolences go out to Bill, Elaine and the Dodge and Marzluff families. Gail will be deeply missed by many.

I enjoyed visiting with Gail at our high school reunions over the years. We always ended those gatherings with plans to get together in the future. Unfortunately, these meetings did not happen, but we definitely enjoyed our conversations reliving life in East Boothbay and funny experiences in high school. I will think of her often and regret that time got away from us, but she was definitely one of those "forever" friends who quietly left her spirit with all of us to share in years to come. Warm regards and deep sympathy to you, Bill, and your family.

We are so very sorry to hear of Gail’s passing. She and I spent our growing up years together......she lived at the top of Thrill Hill and I at the other side. We were first cousins (our Mothers were sisters)! The town was East Boothbay close to Ocean Point......in Maine. She will be missed! I still live in Maine with my husband. Our son Tim and wife Heather with children Sunny Rose And Asher Fox live in Waterville and Daughter Jamie and husband who are moving closer to us after living in Damariscotta, Me. For several years. Gail was a great cousin and she certainly will be missed by all who knew her.
