George Mebane Obituary

George Allen Mebane, IV, of Mocksville, NC, died November 14, 2008 after an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Pat Pannill Mebane.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Marianne Cheek Mebane; sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Allen Mebane, V, of Shelby; Mr. and Mrs. William Michael Mebane, of Winston-Salem; daughter, Lucy Mebane Webster, of Fletcher; brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Mebane, of Greensboro; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of valued relatives, faithful friends and business associates.
Allen was born September 28, 1929 in Greensboro, NC. He excelled in leadership and sports at Christ School in Arden, NC, where he graduated in 1948. After attending Davidson College and Philadelphia University, he served in the United States Army for two years.
Early in his career he worked in sales in the textile industry and became familiar with all aspects of the business. At the age of 35, he assumed his first executive position as President and CEO of Throwing Corporation of America. In l967 he founded, with two others, Universal Textured Yarns where he was President and CEO. Four years later, the company was sold and he and others started Unifi, Inc. Over the next 30 years, the company grew to sales in excess of $1.5 billion, becoming the largest producer and processor of textured yarns in the world with plants in the United States, England, Brazil, and Ireland.
In 2000, Allen retired from Unifi, Inc. and directed his efforts toward the Mebane Charitable Foundation, Inc., with a significant focus on education in public schools. The Foundation has been responsible for providing technology and educational programs to thousands of children in Davie County.
Allen was a member of the Board of Visitors of Columbia University Medical Center of New York, a former member of the Advisory Board of Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC, and Trustee Emeritus of Christ School in Arden, NC.
In addition, he was a founding member of the Country Club of North Carolina, Pinehurst, NC, and a member of Old Town Club, Winston-Salem, NC, and Wade Hampton Club, Cashiers, NC.
Allen possessed an ever-curious and forward-thinking mind; a relentless seeker of information. He pursued his passions for golf, art, hunting, and friends with a great deal of enthusiasm and enjoyed life to its fullest measure.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 22, at 11:00 a.m. at his home.
In lieu of flowers, Allen's family asks that those wishing to honor him consider making contributions to A Storehouse for Jesus, Post Office Box 216, Mocksville, NC, 27028; Christ School, 500 Christ School Road, Arden, NC, 28704; Columbia University, c/o Brian David, PH 8E Room 105, 630 West 168th Street, New York, NY, 10032; or Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Office of Development, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC, 27157.

Mrs. Mebane,
I'm sure you don't remember me but I was fortunate to meet you and Mr. Mebane on serveral occasions while working as the social worker for the Child Development Center in Mocksville. Mr. Mebane was a tremendously gracious man. Having 3 children, 2 of which are enrolled in the Davie County School system, I think of him often as my children benefit from his generosity to Davie County. May God bless you and the family during this time of loss.

Marianne,
It was truly wonderful to be in the presence of Allen as I observed him work for the benefit of children the past 5 years. The speakers today were wonderful. Good job of choosing men who really knew him and thought so much of him!
Marianne, I hope you will cherish the memories of the past 21 years. You made him a better man and he truly thought the world of you. God knew what He was doing by making sure Allen went first.
While eating lunch one day, Allen said to me, "I don't know what I'd do without Marianne". I thought then "I'm eating with a man who really cares and knows the importance of relationships". Wow, how many times did he show caring through his generosity! I loved him and will miss him.
I trust you will take care of yourself and stay active with those things you believe in.
Sincerely ,
Dub Potts

Dear Marianne, Mike, Jay and Lucy
As everyone who knew Mr. Mebane, they will never forget him and the many stories from every aspect will be told again and again about his life and the effect his presence had on their life. My thanks is especially for the life saving help Mr. Mebane and his family gave my wife at the time of her brain aneurysm. More recently Mr. Mebane introduced me to the Storehouse for Jesus in Mocksville. Many thanks to Mr. Mebane for his help to me and the Storehouse.

To Mike and family,

I was very sad to hear the news of the passing of Mr. Mebane. Allen was a man amongst the greatest of men and commanded the respect of all he met! Allen was a man of vision and a leader in every circle in which he was involved.
I will always fondly remember how he seemed to always show up at my meetings with Alf when I was with HCC selling to Unifi to see what new and exciting products we were talking about and how I had to be careful when he would say things like, "well, Randy, how much do I have to comitt to buy to consume all of your capacity"......which of course didn't happen often enough but did occur in the early days of the development of the solution dyed polyester fiber market!
After joining Unifi the opportunities to see Allens wisdom only increased and I feel blessed to have been able to know and work with such a noble and visionary leader as Allen Mebane!
I am thankful to have known such a great man!

Dear Family of Cousin Allen,

I was honored to talk with Cousin Allen last fall by phone a couple of times. He called me after I sent him a note through one of his staff(whom I met while on vacation in Martha's Vineyard). He had previously spoken with my late father (D. Philip Mebane) over the years and my own Uncle Alan Mebane. He gave me permission to call him "Cousin Allen" and was very generous to give me good advice about my health regimen and business, which I am striving to follow. He even was kind enough to send me an e-mail. I wish I could have met him in person, but I am glad I had the opportunity to thank him for being the pride of the extended Mebane family. We were all proud of him, and we know he is now safely in the Lord's wonderful arms in Glory.

God bless you all, and you will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.

Sincere condolences from a member of the extended family,

Tim & San Mebane and family

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Mebane. Mr. Mebane offered me a job when I was fresh out of College and didn't know what I wanted to do. He was also a great friend of my father, Jim Allen. JH Allen, Inc. built many facilities for Mr. Mebane and Unifi. Dad thought the world of this man and I do too. Thank you, Mr. Mebane, for your friendship to my dad and your guidance to me many years ago.

To the family, I am very sorry for your loss. Mr. Mebane was a real hero to many folks.

I have lost my best buddy. I guess many would think ours an unlikely friendship, but it was friendship in the purest form. It knew no age, it knew no boundaries. I could sit with Allen Mebane in his pajamas...how many people can say that!? Better clarify...after retirement Allen, Marianne,Ray and I had the good fortune to share seeing many many beautiful places in the world together. We were perfect traveling companions...Big Al, Dr.Ray, ThePD, and The Princess. We had fondue in Switzerland, Champagne in St.Tropez, Bison in Jackson Hole, Stone Crab in Palm Beach...but the picture in my mind that I choose to keep is of my buddy doing a little soft shoe in front of a certain bright pink wall for us in our favorite of all places...St.Bart. I will miss him forever. I think Marianne, Ray and I will make many more memories together and I know Allen will be with us......Pam and Ray Maynard,Charleston,SC

Marianne,

Allen leaves us with many legacies of living one’s life by example. Those qualities which I will remember most of Allen will be his insatiable zeal for life, passion for making the most of each and every day, his quick wit, unyielding quest for knowledge, passion to the education of all children, and his generosity to others.

We have all lost a very energetic, passionate, person who had a wonderful zest for living. His enthusiasm, generosity, and leadership will be missed by his friends, associates, and the many organizations to which he contributed his time and financial resources. Personally I will always remember him as a man of great integrity who loved his golf! My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Dear Family,
We are so sorry to read of Allen's passing and pray for comfort for you all during this time of sadness.
I also want to say that I am truly grateful, on behalf of my children and family, for the investments Allen made in the children of Davie county. His provisions have left a legacy that many children, including my own 3 daughters, will trace back to their school years and the technology that was made available to them through the generousity of a good soul they all know as Mr Mebane.
May you find peace in the knowledge that Allen's light will shine on for years to come within the classrooms of Davie County.
With deepest sympathy & sincerity,
