George Zevgolis Obituary

George Paul Zevgolis, 85, died Friday, at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh, NC, after a brief period of declining health. George was a native of Washington, DC, and the son of the late Paul Stephen Zevgolis, and Antonia Hios Zevgolis. Most of his life he lived in the Washington, DC area, relocating to Raleigh in 2000. He graduated in 1942 from Eastern High School in Washington, DC; and was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from 1943-1946, in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Following the war, he began his career as a printer for the Evening Star Newspaper, until his retirement in 1978.
George was a proud member of the Columbia Typographical Union, Local 101; America’s oldest Labor Union, from 1943 until his death. He was a 32 Degree Mason and a Shriner. George was a life-long Washington Redskins fan, and an avid golfer, whose biggest thrill was scoring a hole-in-one in 1984 at #2 at Henson Creek Golf Course in Ft. Washington, MD.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Stephen Zevgolis, Kiki Mitsis, and Diana Alexander.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beba H. Zevgolis of Raleigh; daughter, Susan Zevgolis Condon, and her husband, Martin of Fair Oaks, CA; son, Paul S. Zevgolis and his wife, Kaori of Raleigh; grandchildren, Arianthe Zevgolis Condon of Fair Oaks, CA, and Christopher, Stephen and Hana Zevgolis of Raleigh. He is also survived by his nine siblings, Katherine Owens, Mary Moore, Michael Zevgolis, Anthony Zevgolis, Bill Zevgolis, Sophia Traylor, Nitsa Martin, all of Hopewell, VA; and Irene Burton of Alexandria, VA, and Victoria Zevgolis of Washington, DC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held with Trisagion prayers from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity, followed by the interment with Military Honors at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Sunrise of Raleigh for the wonderful care they gave George during the last five years of his life. In particular, CNA Lynda Reynolds, who treated George with respect and was very sensitive to his needs; and Lakisha Fields, CNA Supervisor, who made every effort to accommodate the family’s desires for his care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund, 5000 Lead Mine Rd., Raleigh, NC 27612.

Aunt Beba, Paul & Susan,
Sorry I won't be able to make to Uncle George's funeral tomorrow. I'm in PA for work and won't be able to leave until tomorrow.
The picture of Uncle George is just how I remember him --- good looking and full of conversation.
I'll keep you all in my prayers.
May his memory be eternal.
