Gloria Matthews Obituary

Gloria Miller Matthews, 74, of Swansboro NC, passed away on August 18, 2025 surrounded by her family.

As the daughter of Lela Mae Sorrell Miller and Prentiss Odell Miller, she was born and raised in Benson NC, attending the old Benson School. She obtained her master's in education degree from East Carolina University, while enjoying all that the college life had to offer. In one of her year books, it was noted that she was voted the most popular girl! If you were lucky enough to know her, you would totally agree. She was outgoing, fun, appreciative, creative, always had something funny to say, and loved life.

Gloria was a school teacher with the Johnston County School System and the Pamlico County Schools, retiring after over 18 years. She loved her job! Her students loved her, too.

A book was never far from hershe had a passion for reading. The beach was her happy place, where she often took her precious dog, Charlie girl, who was always by her side for almost 17 years. If Charlie could not go somewhere when she traveled or vacationed, then Gloria did not go!

Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles W. Matthews, with whom she enjoyed a loving marriage for over 25 years; her parents, and her siblings Jerry Miller, Judy Mae Miller and Ed Miller.

She is survived by her son, Tony Matthews (Wendy) of Garner NC, daughters Lori M. Matthews of High Point NC and Beth M. Barker of Swansboro NC, brother Larry Miller (Olevia), sister Sylvia Cash (Bruce) and sister in law Jackie Miller (Ed).

Gloria will be remembered as a wonderful mother, sister, and Nana to her three lovely grandkids.Haley G Matthews, Allie J. Matthews, and Lennox "Knox" Barker, adoring each of them in her own way. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and too many friends to count, many of whom will miss her at their monthly Lunch Bunch get-togethers.

There will be 2 memorial services to be announced at a later date; One in Benson and one in Swansboro.

Gloria was always filled with happiness and joy and laughter. She was a teacher who loved and shared her love for people, her love of knowledge and her love of living with her students and anyone who was touched by her. The students adored her, the teachers respected and admired her and our world became "a more Happy Place" as her sunshine glowed. She will be missed; but memories of her happiness will live on. Rest in Peace, Sweet Lady!
