J. Eugene "Gene" Bartholomew, Sr, 88, of Wilmington, longtime resident of Raleigh and later Wake Forest, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
He was born on April 26, 1935, in Raleigh to the late Lewis and Ila Yates Bartholomew. Gene was a graduate of Hugh Morson High School and a proud 1958 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. He was married to his high school sweetheart, the late Kathryn Newton Bartholomew, for over 63 years prior to her death in August 2021.
Gene worked his way through high school and college to get his degree in business. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard and worked for the State of NC for 37 years. Most of his career was spent in the Revenue Dept, DMV or DOT. Gene retired in 1997 as the Assistant Controller for DOT. He was awarded the state's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, for his service and dedication.
Gene is survived by his son, Joseph E. Bartholomew Jr, (Joey), his wife, Anne Margaret; his grandson, Joseph E. Bartholomew III (Tripp), his wife Abby, their daughter Audrey; his granddaughter, Kathryn B. Nolan, her husband Cleveland, their sons Nash and Landon; another son, Brett D. Bartholomew and his girlfriend, Shannon Bostic, and very dear friends Bob Mooneyham, Marie Clay, and William & Joann Tilley. He was preceded in death by his brothers Melvin, Lewis, and John Bartholomew, and sisters Mary Goodwin and Evelyn Sealey. His classmates and friends from high school remained among his most loyal and devoted friends for his life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 10th at New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Rd, Raleigh NC. Visitation will begin at 1pm, with the service following at 2pm. Interment will follow the service in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Hope Baptist Church or the charity of one's choice.

If you knew Gene you will have to agree he was one of the most pleasant people you've ever met. When I think of him I remember how he was always upbeat.
We've lost a fine example of a man and I'm glad I knew him. RIP

Gene and I were lifelong friends at Morson and Carolina. He was the kind of guy you have to like. I played golf with him about 3 years ago, my last contact, and we spent about 3 hours at Wendy's laughing and telling old stories. I didn't know until today that Gene and I both had 5 brothers and sisters. Though we live in different States, I already miss not laughing with Gene again - however we may yet meet again.

Gene and Kitty were our next door neighbors for almost 40 years. Our boys grew up together. It was only after we both retired was I able to really get to know Gene. I couldn't have asked for better neighbors.

I am saddened to learn of Gene's passing and want to extend my condolences to the family. He will be missed by many more than you will ever know. RIP Gene.

I worked with Gene at NCDOT for a number of years before moving to another department for a promotion. Gene was the best boss I have ever had. He always, always had your back. His wonderful sense of humor had us laughing every day. When I put in my retirement paperwork Gene was the first person I told. As I sat in his office we started retelling stories from our years working together and were laughing so hard that people were coming in from the hallway to see what in the world was so funny. What a special person he was. He was so proud of his boys and loved sweet Kitty. Talked about them everyday. My condolences.
