Jacqueline Sices Obituary

Jacqueline B. Sices

May 14, 2024

Chapel Hill, North Carolina - Jacqueline (Jackie, Jaja) Sices died on May 14, 2024 in Chapel Hill, NC at the age of 90. She was born in Normandy, France in 1933 to Julien and Marie (Noël) Boulon, the sixth of seven children in a tight-knit family. She spent her youth in Eu, Normandy. She and her family were twice evacuated from their home and community during World War II. She had degrees in English language and literature from the Universities of Rouen and Paris, and was awarded the Agrégation in English. Jacqueline came to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship to teach French at Dartmouth College. At Dartmouth she met her future husband, David, who taught in the Romance Languages Department.

Having taught English for a number of years in France, Jacqueline taught French language and culture at Dartmouth College as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer for over twenty years. She greatly enjoyed teaching, counseling her students, and leading language study abroad programs to France and Quebec. She and David raised four children. Upon her retirement, she threw herself into volunteering at a hospice program and at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, as well as tutoring in ESL. In 2003, she and David moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to enjoy mild winters and the community at Carol Woods. There, Jacqueline continued her volunteer work with residents in the Health Center. She battled dementia in the last years of her life, and David supported her during this difficult time.

Jacqueline is survived by her husband David, two sisters, and four children: stepson Andrew (Dahye), Silver Spring, MD; stepdaughter Anne (Bob) Pigue, Fairfield, CT; daughter Laura (Peter), Goleta, CA; and son Harry, Washington, DC; as well as nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Following Jacqueline's wishes, no funeral services are planned, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date at Carol Woods Retirement Community, Chapel Hill, NC.

A great professor at Dartmouth while I was a student. I was the assistant teacher for her at Dartmouth´s French program in Quebec City, Winter 1982. She was a wonderful woman!

She was unusually selfless: driving a student who had a broken leg to her various errands; tending to a former colleague with Alzheimer's so his spouse could have some moments of free time. She did things for people which she thought the govt should provide, all the while decrying Bush I's call for reliance on such activity. She didn't want to be one of his "points of light," though she clearly was one.
