James Richard Glover

Durham, North Carolina - The family of James Richard Glover is grateful for his long life and legacy of love. James, also known as Jim or Jimmy, died at Duke University Hospital on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the age of 86. He was born on May 4, 1939, in Durham, NC, to the late James Robert Glover and Juanita Rogers Glover. At the age of nine, he and his family relocated to Butner, NC.
In Granville County, Jim was a 1957 graduate of Creedmoor High School (now South Granville). He furthered his education at East Carolina College (now University) in Greenville, NC earning his BS Degree in Industrial Arts in 1963. In 1977, he completed his Master's Degree with a concentration in Driver and Safety Education at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, Greensboro, NC.
Jim had a long and successful career in the Durham Public School system. From 1962 to 1970, he taught Drafting and Industrial Arts at Southern High School. He was an Assistant Principal at Neal Junior High School from 1970 to 1981. From 1981 to 1990, he served as Director of Transportation, being responsible for a fleet of approximately 230 school buses. From 1990 to 1994, he became Director of Transportation Information Management Systems assisting with the implementation of the TIMS program, which was the computerization of school bus routing. Jim retired from the school system in July 1994. His post-retirement job of being a customer service representative for the local Kerr and Eckerd Drug companies was one he enjoyed a great deal.
Church attendance and participation was always an important part of Jim's life. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church and later Grey Stone Church, both in Durham, NC.
Jim enjoyed his time traveling with Juliana and visiting destinations throughout the United States and the Canadian provinces. The New England states and their historical significance were always a favorite.
Jim was a hobbyist at heart, with a love for model trains, stamps, coins, and most anything collectible. He also loved history and family ancestry.
Jim adored his family and found great joy in spending time with his sons-in-law and grandsons. Watching sports and game shows together were a favorite.
Jim was a "people person" who never met a stranger. He always took time to engage in meaningful conversations.
Saturday morning visits to the local McDonald's was a social gathering with his friends, whom he nicknamed the "Olden Goldens."
Jim is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of sixty-one years, Juliana Currin Glover; two loving daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Glover Johnson and husband, Steve, and Jessica Glover Brown and husband, Jeff. He felt very blessed to be the grandfather of Bryce Alexander Johnson, Ryan William Brown, and Aaron James Brown. Jim is preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Glover Kincaid.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 2:00 pm at Grey Stone Church with Dr. Clay Waters officiating. The family will receive guests at a visitation prior to the service from 12:00–2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jim's memory to the Grey Stone Church Music Ministry, 2601 Hillsborough Rd, Durham, NC 27705.
