James Wilson Obituary
Cary
James Blake "Jim" Wilson, born February 9, 1924, in Albion, Michigan, passed away on November 19, 2016, in Raleigh, NC. Raised in Gainesville, Florida, he graduated from the University of Florida in 1948, earned his Master's at Cornell, and returned to Florida to complete his PhD in mathematics in 1957. He spent his entire career at North Carolina State University, teaching math from 1957-1994. In addition to his university teaching, he was very dedicated to his church and taught Sunday School for over 50 years.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army, stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. During the Korean War, he taught at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years of active and reserve service.
Jim met Nell Philips while she was working with his father in the Dean's Office at the University of Florida. They married in December 1949. He is survived by Nell & their children: Lois Marshburn (Larry), Gary Wilson (Yuan-ling), Mary Ashburn (Tom), & Marcia Caldwell (Todd). They have 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and 3 brothers.
Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:45 on Monday, November 28, at Westover United Methodist Church, Raleigh, NC, with memorial service following at 11:00.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westover United Methodist Church or Transitions Life Care. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. James S. Parsons and staff, and the entire staff of The Oaks at Mayview Skilled Nursing for their love and care.

Dr. Wilson always reflected his Christian faith in and out of the classroom. Really enjoyed having him as a teacher. He always said, "every mathematical proof should have a Hence, gives it class". Dr. Wilson certainly had class and much more.
