Janice Marshall McGee
Wilmington
Janice Marshall McGee of Wilmington, North Carolina, after 54 years of life on earth, was called home on January 23, 2013 to live for eternity with her Heavenly Father. Janice was born on June 1, 1958 in Brunswick, Georgia.
Janice forever will be remembered for her abiding love of nature, her gentle spirit and caring heart, her fierce determination to overcome the obstacles she encountered during her life, and her love for her family. Janice loved to dig in the dirt and grow plants and flowers. She was a member of the National Audubon Society and enjoyed a keen interest in birds, especially her companion of 30 years, a colorful Rothschild yellow shouldered Amazon parrot named "Scrounge." Scrounge inspired the name of the Parrot Nest motel on Sanibel Island, Florida, of which Janice was a co-owner during the 1980s.
Janice loved the ocean and tropical environments, having lived over the years on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Sanibel Island and St. Croix, BVI. However, the North Carolina coast held first claim on her heart, particularly her beloved Bogue Sound.
While living on Sanibel Island, Janice spent several weeks during the summer in the Florida Keys volunteering at the Sunny Shores Sea Camp, a place of respite and fun for children suffering from cystic fibrosis.
Janice was the first female to earn an associate degree in automotive and diesel mechanics at the Ryder Technical Institute of Tampa, Florida. She also held an associate degree from Wake Tech in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Janice is survived by her parents, Alan and Nancy McGee of Advance, North Carolina, by her brother Larry McGee and his wife Sandra of Lewisville, North Carolina and by her sisters, Susan McGee of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Nanci Robinson and her husband Chris of Swansboro, North Carolina. Also surviving her are two nephews and two nieces, three great nephews and one great niece.
A private service for family and friends celebrating Janice's life will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janice's memory may be made to the National Audubon Society, 225 Varick St., New York, NY 10014 (

Out of the Shadows
Shadows of the cross are all He gave me
Shadows of the cross are all I see,
But out of the shadows His arms are stretching outward
And lifting upwards, lifting me.
High above the cross I seem to go
Leaving all its shadows far below,
Higher still, behind me lies all sorrow,
And my eyes reflect His promise of - Tomorrow!
Tomorrow, when the sound of weeping stills
And in His keeping only joy will I hear,
Then my heart suddenly leaping, no longer aching
Will I understand this darkness and not fear.
Then trembling hands and feeble knees
And head bowed low upon my breast,
Will be strengthened and uplifted,
Thoughts of grief all be drifted
Away as in His arms I rest.
