John Carbone Obituary

John A. Carbone died February 27, 2008 surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Brooklyn, NY to Gennaro and Christina Carbone on January 28, 1924. In 1951 he moved to Jacksonville, NC with his wife, Jean, and family to open the Brooklyn Spaghetti House. In January of 1958 he and Jean moved their family to Raleigh to open the legendary Villa Capri Italian Restaurant on Hillsborough Street. In 1967 they moved the restaurant to the Ridgewood Shopping Center and remained there until 1984 when their daughter Maria and her husband Michael House partnered with them to create the Casa Carbone Ristorante on Glenwood Avenue.
John was a faithful servant of the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, donating his time and culinary talents to many diocesan events. During those years, he was a member of both Sacred Heart Cathedral and of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. In August 2004, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon John the Vatican BENEMERENTI Medal for his lifetime of dedicated service to the Catholic Church.
He was also a pioneer in the utilization of the North Carolina Prison Work Release Program and successfully mentored many in their transition back into society.
John was a prominent member of the YMCA on Hillsborough Street, where he was a gifted athlete who won several state and mid-state handball championships.
He leaves behind many friends and family whose lives he has touched and enriched with his gracious love of God and community. In addition to his loving wife of 60 years Jean, he is survived by his children; Ann Marco and her husband, Jim of Raleigh, John S. Carbone and his wife, Tammy of Daytona FL, Maria House and her husband, Michael of Raleigh, Gianine Carbone and her husband, Duncan Murray of Austin, TX. Also surviving are his eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; John's brother, Leonard Carbone.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Carbone.
The family would like to thank the dedicated and loving staff at Mayview Convalescent Center for their compassion and gentle care.
A memorial Mass celebrating John's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Dr., Raleigh NC 27608.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Dr, Raleigh, NC 27608 or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St Mary's St, Fourth Floor, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Dearest Jean and Family,

The entire Gallagher family was saddened to learn of John's death. John, your family, Villa Capri and Casa Carbone are part of delightful memories from years past. Those were such wonderful times for all of us. My father held John in such high regrard.

Your family made a historic contribution to the culinary experience of the South! Raleigh was fortunate to have an authentic introduction to Italian food!

I will always have a picture of John in my mind, standing tall with a charming twinkle in his eye and a gracious welcome for all.

You have our thoughts and prayers.

Love to All,
Patsy Gallagher Campbell

Dear Jean and family,

My name is Shoshana. I am the daughter of Leon Felgere. My parents were friends of yours in the Jacksonville days. I remember eating in the Brooklyn Spaghetti House. I remember picniking once, at the beach. I remember bringing Lenny's wife from New York.

My mother died in 1976. Daddy in 2006. He always talked about Johnny with tremendous affection.

I shall be in North Carolina in December of this year. I live in Israel. I shall try to phone you and see you and fill you in on the intervening years.

It was with a very heavy heart that I read of the passing of your Dad. It has been many years since we walked the streets from your house to mine in Ridgewood but they are remembered fondly. March 3, 2008

Over many years, my father (GEORGE BARONE) has told me stories and provided updates about his cousin John and his family who moved down south and opened a fabulous Italian restaurant.

John and my father were close growing up in New York City and whenever my father speaks of John, it is with great warmth and fondness.

It is with deep saddness when we heard of his passing. May God be with you during this difficult time.

Dear Jean, Maria, and family - I am so sorry to learn about John's passing. From the time he helped my grandmother come to the US from Italy after WWII to when I relocated to NC from NY and he so graciously helped me in my move, I will never forget him, his love of life, and his genuine kindness. I am very honored and blessed to have known him, even if for just a few years.
God Bless you All,
Michael

John Carbone gave so much love and warm hospitality to his family and friends throughout his life.

A man's success can sometimes be measured by his effect on those to whom he dedicated his life. John's family members are
testaments to his loving success.

My friendship with Michael, Maria, and Timothy House is very dear to me and to my family.
May God bless the soul of John Carbone and all of us to His service.

I'm so sorry to hear about John's death. Our family had dinner in Villa Capri every week in the 60's & 70's. My father also was an active member of the YMCA during those years. We had many happy memories of those evenings. But the most moving of all, is the night after our Mother had died. John & Jean prepared dinner with all the Family in the Restaurant. That memory has meant so much since her death. I know our Fathers are playing handball on the courts of Heaven. All my best to the entire family. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Carbone and House Families,

My mother taught Michelle, Ginine, and Jane House. I was in the same grade as Ginine and remember Michelle's tragic death. I always loved when my family went to eat at the best Italian restuarant in Raleigh. We followed you guys from Ridgewood Shopping Center to Glenwood Ave. Catholics believe that death is not a end but a celebrated beginning.

God Bless,

Maria,
Many, many years ago, when I worked at the picture framing shop at Oak Park on Glenwood Avenue, my coworkers and I always looked forward to dinner on Monday and Wednesday nights when our shop was open late. We would walk down to your restaurant and indulge ourselves in your spaghetti with meat sauce and marinara sauce. Your father always met us with an outstretched hand and kind words. I know he will be missed. My condolences to you and yours.
