John Flournoy Obituary

Dr. John Eppes Flournoy

Morehead City

Dr. John Eppes Flournoy, 80, of Morehead City, passed away peacefully Dec. 9, 2018, at his home in Morehead City.

His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort. The Rev. Mary Ogus and Rev. Michael Singer will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Morehead City.

Dr. Flournoy was born in Richmond, VA on August 18, 1938 to Albert and Claire Flournoy. He married the love of his life, Penn Walker, on June 22, 1963, in Richmond. This was the start of a love affair that would span over 55 years. Penn preceded John in death on July 9, 2018, so it is fitting that he would join her exactly five months later.

Dr. Flournoy spent one year serving his country in the United States Coast Guard. He attended Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., where he received his degree in pharmacy (1956-1960) and then after working as a pharmacist for a year, went back to the Medical College of Virginia to medical school (1961–1965).

Dr. Flournoy did a one-year internship at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Ohio. He completed his residency in Radiology at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Va., as well as participated in the teaching program at the medical school. He moved to Kinston to practice radiology.

Dr. Flournoy is survived by his son, John Scott Flournoy, and his wife, Jennifer, of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Elisabeth Flournoy Hill of Greensboro, N.C.; his brother James Edward Flournoy of Manassas, Va.; his sister Jane Flournoy of Colonial Heights, Va.; his granddaughter, Grayson Walker Hill, and his grandson, Zachary Chase Hill, both of Greensboro.

The family will receive guests Monday, Dec. 17, at Brooks Funeral Home, 201 Professional Drive, Morehead City, from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

In addition to his wife Penn, Dr. Flournoy was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Herbert Flournoy Jr. and Claire Horne Flournoy; sisters Mary Ridgway Flournoy and Claire Flournoy Barret and one brother, Albert Herbert Flournoy III.

The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 215 Ann St., Beaufort, N.C. 28516 or St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Roundtree Ave., Kinston, N.C. 28501.

The family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Brooks Funeral Home and Crematory of Morehead City. Access online obituary and leave internet condolences through www.brooksfuneralhomeandcrematory.com

I had the pleasure of going to school at LMH School of Radiologic Technology and working there for a short time. Dr Flournoy was always so nice to work with and Penn was a sweet lady.
