Apex, NC, North Carolina - John Waldrop Powell, 69, of Apex passed away surrounded by his family at UNC Hospital on September 27, 2023. John was born on April 20, 1954 to William S. "Bill" and Virginia Penn Waldrop Powell in Chapel Hill, NC. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government in 1976, and worked as a global sales and business development executive in the airline industry for many years. He married Tracey Armstrong on June 15, 1985, and they raised four children together. John was an active member of the Church of the Holy Family and loved spending time with his family, friends, and cats. John was also an avid NC State Wolfpack fan, and enjoyed working in his garden and running with his friends from Fleet Feet.

John is preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Geoffrey Armstrong. John is survived by his wife, Tracey Armstrong Powell of Apex, NC; and their four children; James (Sara) Powell of Marina, CA, Caitlin (Chris) Fuller of Durham, NC, Allison Powell of Bozeman, MT, and Nicole Powell of Durham, NC; his brother, Charles (Janet) Powell of Concord, NC; sister, Ellen (Stephen) Feild of Greensboro, NC; brother-in-law, Steve (Caron) Armstrong of Kernersville, NC; and parents-in-law, Bob and Bobbie Armstrong of Chapel Hill, NC. John was the proud grandfather of Nathaniel and Avery Fuller. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family is grateful for the staff at UNC Cancer Hospital and Clinics for their care the last 18 months.

A Funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on November 21, 2023 at the Church of the Holy Family, 200 Hayes Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
