I met John in the early 2000's. I was introduced by his good friend the late Styres Green 'from Aberdeen'. That first night sitting for hours with John, Styres, Kevin, Emmett, Pete and "Re-Pete" (Pete's business partner) and myself (Walter) was the first of many MANY poker nights. Our camaraderie was historic and arguably some of my most memorable gatherings with my boys....my posse. John LOVED to play poker. What he loved most was to alter some of our games just enough as to make LUCK a greater factor. You see we were all good poker players and knew all to well each other's strategies.
I believe John took great pleasure in "calling out" the one of us whom forgot to anti up. 7 times a night we would hear "who forgot to anti"? (as we all threw extra chips in the pot just to not be caught by our accountant!) I was a huge Duke fan and as luck would have it
John was my rival UNC fan...we had many great poker nights watching either Duke play or UNC, sometimes each other. I found John to be a very generous man whom counted his blessings for the successful life he engineered for himself. I miss John very much. I pray for John's soul and for his family daily. I can only imagine what
John's doing right now.....HEY, WHO FORGOT TO ANTI?

I knew John in the summers of 1981 and 1984 when I was teaching at UNCW for the summer. John was a great guy. May you rest in peace John.

He taught me accounting at UNCW. He was very kind and I've never forgotten him. He made an impact on my career and helped me at a time whenI really needed it. My sympathies are with his family and friends. He will be remembered well

John was our good friend, our good neighbor, and our CPA for decades. We have happy memories of the times that he was in our house, that we were in his house or that we simply ran into one another and passed the time of day up and down the street, around Wrightsville Beach and around Wilmington. Those were always occasions for smiles and laughter. He was a man of learning and a man of his time-well and widely read and well informed. He was a cultured man with a love of music. He was equally at home with rock music and at a Symphony concert. A true Blue Tar Heel fan he was always ready for a cold beer and cheerful company with friends. John was a humble, quiet and modest man-never a braggart. A life long Democrat he believed that the fortunate among us should help others. He was a brave man who bore terrible illness with a smile and a positive attitude. He never complained or felt sorry for himself. We will miss him and remember him. The world is a smaller place without John Zeko. Jerome Williams and Diane Dorsett Williams, Wrightsville Beach, NC
