Joseph Boyette Obituary

Joseph Greene Boyette, 72, died November 7, 2001 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Born in Colerain on May 10, 1929, Dr. Boyette was educated in the public schools of Rocky Mount and of Pitt County. He served in theMedical Corp of the US Navy from 1947 to 1952, and was posted on the hospital ship USS Consolation during the Korean War. He attended Duke University, East Carolina College and NC State University, where he received a doctorate in Zoology in 1966.
Dr. Boyette began a 32-year long career at East Carolina University in 1957, attaining the rank of Professor of Biology andserving as Dean of the Graduate School. He retired in 1989 as Associate Vice-Chancellor for Research. Dr. Boyette belonged toa number of local and national organizations, including the Greenville River Park North Bird Club, the Pitt County HistoricalAssociation, Releaf, Sigma Xi, and the Sierra Club.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn L. Boyette; daughters, Sally B. Cone and her husband, Robert C. Cone of Greensboro, Josephine E. Boyette of Greenville; son, Lawrence J. Boyette and his wife, Judith DeGroat of Madrid, NY; grandchildren, Sam and Laurie Cone of Greensboro, Lucy Watson of Greenville.
The family will receive friends at the Beaumont residence from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, November 10th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, P.O. Box 1854, Washington, NC 27889, or the ECU School of Medicine Diabetes Center, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
Arrangements are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory, Greenville.
