Joseph "Joe" Tilman Swails, 92, of Raleigh completed his earthly journey on Wednesday October 17, 2018 with his loving wife Sue by his side. Completing their wedding vows after 48 wonderful years of marriage.
Joe was a metallurgist and engineer enjoying many years of his cherished occupation until his retirement from IBM in 1990.
His three most precious things in life were his family, service to his county and his beloved Louisiana State University Tigers. Joe was a Graduate of LSU.
Joe is survived by his wife Sue, son, Brian and his wife Barbara, Joseph, Jr. and Katherine; and grandchildren, Barrett, Bailey, Beckett, and Bella.
He served proudly in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard and is a veteran of World War II.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, October 21, 2018 in the chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh NC. Entombment will follow with Military Honors at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum with a reception immediately afterward at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Dear Sue.. I just now found out that your beloved Joe has passed on.. please know my prayers are with you.. I know you told me you also lost your sister not long ago.. I too have lived with the seemingly unbearable pain of loosing those so deeply embedded in our hearts... I wish I could say that with time.. the loss weakens.. but in fact .. it does not.. we just try to keep in mind.. that their suffering is over and they watch over us constantly.. I like think of it as though I'm carrying them in the secret compartment in my wallet or in my change pocket of my blue jeans.. silly?.. perhaps.. but they loved that silliness about my personality..
thank you Sue..your were a good friend.. and FYI..your hamburger stroganoff recipe is STILL on my monthly menu!! what's it been?..

He was "my Uncle Joe" & a stellar gentleman that had one of the largest impacts on my life. He left me with treasured memories. So admired & truly, so loved. Heaven is so lucky to have him.
