Larry Stogner Obituary

Larry Stogner

October 25, 1946 - October 3, 2016

Durham

Our beloved husband and father, Larry Neal Stogner, 69, died in our home on Monday after a 21-month battle with ALS. He was quite weary of the fight and ready to be with his Lord.

Larry was born in Burlington and raised in Yanceyville. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Air Force, including a tour of Vietnam, before returning to UNC where he became a loyal Tarheel and got the bug for broadcast journalism. With a rich, deep voice and a true gift for writing he was a perfect fit for the anchor desk where he proudly worked with his ABC team. He was thrilled to receive his 40-year Donald Duck statue from Disney among other prized awards such as The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the UNC Journalism Hall of Fame, the N. C. Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, an Emmy nomination, Lifetime Achievement Awards from the 4-H Clubs and Chamber of Commerce, and fondly, the permanent naming of the ABC studio, The Larry Stogner Studio.

Whenever Larry's travels took him to foreign lands, to meet dignitaries and world leaders, to experience adventures such as flying the F-16 or boarding aircraft carriers, to see catastrophes or celebrations firsthand, he always tried to paint such a true and complete picture that every viewer could share in the experience. He wanted to be that eyewitness and report back to all in the heart of North Carolina.

The main hobby that Larry enjoyed was his golf. He was a good player but more than the sport, he liked the friendships and the opportunity to raise some support for charity tournaments. He also found loyal buddies at the Sandy Creek Park where he walked his dogs every morning for ten years and where a handicap trail is planned to be built in his honor.

Larry was devoted to his wife of 25 years, Bobbi Welch Stogner, and the six children they shared. The surviving children are Karen Stogner Diquez (Ricardo) and children Noah, Gabriel and Emanuel, Adam James Kirkley (Kelly) and children Michelle and Matthew, Laura Suzanne Stogner, Andrew David Kirkley, Luke Robert Kirkley (Amber) and children Rowan and Fiona, and Patrick Lawrence Stogner. Also surviving him are his brother Keith (Joan), and loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

The Memorial Service will be held at New Hope Church on Fayetteville Road in Durham on October 12 at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Larry's favorite ministry, a Kenyan church and children's home via

Larry Stogner was the quintessence of a Southern Gentleman, fair minded Television Anchor , friend to all , a true public servant . I was fortunate to get to know him better in his later years when we occassionately played golf together after which we would converse on local and state events. His life and happiness were enriched by his loving spouse Bobbie and family. We in turn were blessed by his presence and friendship.

I first knew Larry through his work. Watched him when I was learning how to be a reporter and probably learned more from him than I did in class. Years later, Larry was kind enough to be interviewed for my radio program and when I was back in the area a couple of years ago, I spent some time with him at WTVD. I'll never forget his kindness and his good work, and especially, I'll remember the faith and courage he lived during his illness. He loved his family, his country, his work and his Lord. That is a life well lived.

Dear Bobbie and Family.

What an inspirational service for Larry, your family . and all of us who were blessed to attend. I simply cannot imagine how anyone who attended would leave without feeling closer to God and to follow His Word. Additionally all of the speakers, including Adam who did a wonderful job of eulogizing his Dad under trying circumstances, along with Larry's "Letter from Heaven", therefore making us more committed to helping those in need.

The most precious gift to a Judge is to be in position to unite a deserving Parent and her kids. I am forever blessed for you allowing to do just that.

God Bless you and your precious family'

Dear Stogner family,

I believe life is an ever-flowing process and so it is with Larry. So when you are drawn by the beauty and fragrance of a flower or hear a melody projected by a singing bird or if, occasionally, a butterfly flickers nearby and meanders near, this could be a sign that Larry is still near and is making sure you are alright and bringing a message that he is at peace.

Larry was a special man and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Bobbi & family,

Sending condolences. He was a light to many through the news and his life. I was in a bible study with you at Crossroads Fellowship and also remember Patrick being in a play about a father and son (John 3:16) and seeing y'all at church. Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance!

To Karen and Laura:
I was one of your teachers at Carroll Middle School and enjoyed having both of you in my class. I remember when you asked your father to do a presentation at the school, and we were impressed by his kindness and professionalism. He was a fine representative of the broadcasting industry for the Raleigh-Durham area.
