Lucile Norvell Obituary

Mrs. Lucile Proctor Norvell of 950 Confederate Ave, Salisbury, NC passed away Friday, May 23, 2008 at her residence.
Mrs. Norvell was born February 23, 1923 in Clifton, NJ, the daughter of Edward Edson Proctor and Lucile Streckfuss Proctor. She moved to Salisbury with her family in 1938.
A graduate of Boyden High School and Woman's College (the University of North Carolina at Greensboro), she also did post graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She majored in art and taught in the Rowan County School in Rockwell and China Grove prior to marriage.
She was married to Edwin Overman Norvell at St. Luke's Episcopal Church September 16, 1950. Mr. Norvell passed away November 2, 2001.
Mrs. Norvell was a homemaker and active in civic and church affairs. A member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she served on several local boards and commissions. She was formerly a member of the board of directors of Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, the Waterworks Art Gallery, the Rowan County Parks and Recreation Commission, and the Episcopal Church Women of St. Luke's. She also served on the board of Proctor Chemical Company and has served as President and a board member of the Proctor Foundation, a family charitable foundation established by her mother, Lucile S. Proctor. She was a member and treasurer of the Rowan Committee of the National Society for the Colonial Dames of America in the state of North Carolina, the Symposium Book Club, and a founding member of the Piedmont Players Theatre Inc. and the Waterworks Art Gallery. She was also a member of the Salisbury Country Club.
Mrs. Norvell and her husband were awarded the Gertrude Carraway Award of the North Carolina Preservation Foundation for their outstanding work in the Salisbury community for Historic Preservation including the restoration of three houses in the West Square Historic District and the historic Crawford Building at 200 South Main Street. The Norvells were also awarded the Clement Cup of the Historic Salisbury Foundation for their work for historic preservation.
Mrs. Norvell was active in local philanthropy both individually and through her role on the board of the Proctor Foundation. The Norvell Distant Learning Center at Rowan Cabarrus Community College was named for the Norvells in honor of their generosity to the College. The Norvells were also one of the three largest donors to the Meroney Theater restoration of the Piedmont Players Theatre Inc. Their generosity is evidenced by large gifts made to the Eagle's Nest Nature Preserve, Dan Nicholas Park, Habitat for Humanity, the Waterworks Visual Art Center, the Salisbury YMCA, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Salisbury Station, Catawba College, and other community projects. Most recently she made a major gift to the Piedmont Players Theatre for their new children's theater project on East Fisher Street.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin O. Norvell November 2, 2001.
Mrs. Norvell is survived by two sons, Edward Proctor Norvell and his wife, Susan Linn Norvell of Salisbury, Owen Barbour Norvell and his wife, Elizabeth Carter Norvell of Cary; two grandchildren, Mary Linn Norvell of Salisbury and Philip Barbour Norvell of Wilmington; three step-grandchildren, Daniel Pierce and Cortney Pierce of Cary, Chris Norvell and his wife, Nancie Norvell of Raleigh and their daughter, Mrs. Norvell's step-great grandchild, Chloe Norvell of Raleigh; a sister, Patricia Proctor Rendleman of Salisbury also survives her. In addition to her family she is survived by her caregivers, Jean Jones, who has been an important part of the family for 21 years, and Barbara Oglesby, Dottie Miller, and Tonya Parker who have provided exceptional care.
A visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m. Saturday night at Summersett Funeral Home and following services on Sunday at her home. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Rev. Cecilia C. Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at the family plot at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
