Margaret Jenkins Obituary

Margaret passed away on Friday, August 29 at The Bridge at Longmont, an assisted living residence, from heart failure. She was a tireless, affectionate, and loving mother, wife, sister, aunt, and daughter.

Margaret was born in Granite Falls, North Carolina, the youngest daughter of Cora and Wade Anderson. She lived in Hickory, N.C., through high school. She graduated from Hickory High in 1947 and briefly attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. A complication with her eyesight caused her to lose vision in her left eye and to leave college prematurely. She was there long enough to become a lifelong, active sister in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Soon after, she moved to Raleigh, NC, to find her path and began a long, on-and-off tenure with Wachovia Bank. First as a teller, then head teller, and eventually she took on more administrative duties and became a personal banker, consulting and advising individual customers.

Across the street from the Raleigh home she rented a room in, she spotted the young NC State University student who would soon become her husband. Alvin Jenkins Jr. and Margaret were married in July 1951. Her first son, Stephen, was born in 1952, and shortly after, they were stationed in Red Bank, NJ. Alvin, a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, was next stationed in Panama.

After the war, Al received his doctorate from the University of Virginia, and, in 1958, Margaret delivered their son Jeffrey, and they soon moved to Littleton, Colorado. Al's teaching positions moved the family from Colorado to Wichita, Kansas, and Raleigh, North Carolina. Retirement saw them settle in Little River, South Carolina, before they finally moved to Longmont, CO, her final hometown. Margaret always managed to quickly become an active member of a local church and sorority, wherever she lived. She was a caring, gregarious, social person and made lifelong friends wherever she went.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Wade Cloud Anderson and Cora Walker Anderson; her husband Alvin Jenkins, Jr.; her oldest son, Stephen Jenkins; and her brother, Jackie, and sister, Helen Stogner. She is survived by son Jeffrey and partner Rebecca Purcell of NYC; daughter-in-law Robin Page of Boulder, CO; grandchildren Page and husband Andy Scott and great-grand children Ash and Wren, of Longmont, CO; Alec and wife Zoe Shuchter of Oakland, CA; Jamie and partner Olivia Sturman, of Brooklyn, NY; sister-in-law Betty Lou Brown and husband Samuel Brown, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; She was much loved by her many nieces and nephews and their children.

A memorial service will be held at Westview Presbyterian Church, 1500 Hover Street, Longmont, at 5:30 p.m. EST., Saturday, September 6th. Here is a Zoom link for the service:

I will always cherish the time I had with Margaret. I loved doing her hair while she was at The Bridge. She was such a special lady and I really enjoyed spending time with her. I will miss her so much!

Margaret was the most beautiful southern belle, with a heart as big as the world. I will miss the salon trips, and lunch outings . But mostly your sweet stories and warm hugs.
