Margie Hathaway Obituary

Margie Rose Buffaloe Hathaway passed away quietly and peacefully on April 27, 2009 at the age of 97 years. She was surrounded physically and in spirit by her loving family. Born November 9, 1911, Margie Rose was the third daughter of the late Rosa Catherine (Dughi) Buffaloe and the late John Herbert Buffaloe of Raleigh, NC. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Woodrow Wilson Hathaway, Sr., as well as her two older sisters, Elizabeth Buffaloe Scott of Raleigh and Pauline Buffaloe Poole of Boiling Springs, SC, and her beloved baby brother, John Herbert Buffaloe, Jr. of Tacoma, WA. Margie Rose was a native Raleighite and proud that her ancestors had roots deep in the native soil. New Hope Baptist Church was the church home of the family and she was delighted when she and her family returned to Raleigh after many years of living elsewhere so that she could re-connect with extended family and her church. She was active in the community and volunteered for many years as a docent at the Governor’s Mansion. Margie Rose took a special delight in telling groups of visiting school children stories of how she and her childhood friend, Angelia Morrison, then-Governor Morrison’s daughter, played under the big dining room table in the mansion with Angelia’s little dog. Margie Rose was also active in the local DAR and UDC chapters, again relishing that connection to family. She was a long-time member of the Raleigh Women’s Club and attended Sunday School at New Hope as long as she was able. Margie Rose is survived by her devoted family – her son, Woodrow (Woody) Wilson Hathaway, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Betty, of High Point; her daughter, Margie Hathaway Kensil and son-in-law Dan of Concord, her “favorite black-haired granddaughter” Karen Hathaway Mullins, Karen’s husband Tim, and her two great-grandchildren, Andrew (Drew ) Thomas Mullins and Hannah Rose Mullins, all of Concord; and her “favorite red-haired granddaughter” Courtney Hathaway Beck and Courtney’s husband Tracy, of Cary. We will always remember and treasure the many years that Margie Rose was a part of our lives and we know that she’s with us still. We thank the caring and committed staffs of Crossroad Retirement Community of Asheboro, Autumn Care of Salisbury, and Rowan Regional Hospice for the love, care, and support that they gave so freely. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Raleigh is handling the arrangements for the family. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 29 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd, Raleigh. A service to celebrate Margie Rose’s life will be held on Thursday, April 30, at 12:00 noon at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd. Interment will follow at New Hope Baptist Cemetery, Raleigh, NC.

Dear Woody and Family,
We share your grief and are here to love you through this time with our prayers. Our memories of your Mother are seeing her out enjoying eating with you and also in the hospital in years past. May the sweet memories you have of her fill your hearts for the rest of your lives. God blessed us with mothers to tenderly guide us and love us unconditionally. We know yours was so special to you. Remember we love you. Sarah Jo and Jim
