Martha Griswold Obituary

Martha Perkins Griswold

July 31, 1928 - March 7, 2024

Cary, North Carolina - Martha Perkins Griswold passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, in Cary, NC. Born on July 31, 1928, in Vienna, Austria to Warwick and Esther Mary Perkins, Martha spent much of her childhood traveling, as her father served in the United States Foreign Service. Martha and her two sisters - Susanna and Camilla - were with their mother and father in Austria, Poland, Canada, and Turkey. In 1954 Martha married her lifelong love, Charles Henry Griswold. She and Charles lived in Emmerton, MD and Baltimore, MD before relocating to Old Lyme, CT. Martha was an enthusiastic first-grade teacher as well as a loving supporter of her husband's work as the pastor at St. Ann's Episcopal Church. She and Charles were devoted parents to their four children - Michael, David, Andrew, and Jessica - who were greatly shaped by their parents' kindness, love, and dedication. Several years after Charles' passing in 1991, Martha relocated to Cary, NC to be closer to her two oldest sons. She was an active member of Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church and spent much of her free time gardening, reading, and playing with her grandchildren. Martha is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Susanna Jaeger. She is survived by her sister, Camilla Morton, her son, Michael and his wife, Gail Griswold, her son, David and his wife, Aleta Griswold, her son, Andrew and his wife, Marilou Griswold, and her daughter, Jessica Griswold, as well as her grandchildren - Cyrus Griswold, Alex Griswold, Caroline Purdy and her husband, Tim Purdy, and Sam Griswold, and two great-grandchildren - Mehera and Ellis Griswold. Her family and friends will remember her wit, passion for learning and teaching, and the constant love she had for the people around her. Martha's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at Avendelle Assisted Living for the wonderful care they took of her in the last few years of her life. A Celebration of Life will be held in the coming months in Old Lyme, CT. In lieu of flowers, please make charitable contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

I´m just seeing this right now online, my darling American grandmother has joined the good lord in heavenShe was a sweet heart to all, especially my late wife Soussan Shafeei. Oh my God Martha I will miss you ! I tried calling so many times, I had move from Cary to Lumberton after my wife´s passing. My moving library( that´s what I called her) has joined our Lord. She was kind and always giving , always thinking about others especially the poor in our society! God! I can´t believe this! She will call me Ugo can you come over to water my plantsshe loved her plants! She loved nature! She was a beauty, always elegant and simple! Oh my dear Martha! I drove her once with my late wife to the black history museum at charlotte Nc . May your soul rest in peace dear Martha. I will miss you a lot! You lived a good life my lady

I'm sending condolences to the Griswold family. I have fond memories of being a shy teen having dinner with Andrew at his house, and how gracious Mrs. Griswold was. If only teens were wired to be curious about grown ups lives, as I would have learned more about her interesting childhood and young adulthood! I also recall a trip to G. Fox in Hartford with Andrew and her, where I bought groovy colorful toe sox. Losing a mom is awful... thinking of you, Andrew.

Caroline's poem to her Grandmother -

Bone China cups, their edges like ivory parchment
Buckwheat pancakes, small and sweet
Crocus, Daffodil, Lantana, Alstroemeria
Goose down and white linen sheets

Your hands turning the pages of a book
Loving the language, tasting the words
The smell of amber, tea, and powder
Warm and soft

The light in your sunroom and on the tops of our heads
Bent together, we cradle photographs
Careful to only touch the edges
Lest our fingerprints cloud the memories

A mossy glen, hugged by water
Cool light filters through the trees
Oak leaves alight upon the stone
They, like you, can rest now

Martha´s favorite poem
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
