Martin Schwartz Obituary

Martin Schwartz
Raleigh
Martin Schwartz passed away on November 3, 2012, at the age of 95. Born in Philadelphia, PA to the late Ethel and Nathan Schwartz, Martin graduated from South Philadelphia High School, class of 1934. He was a Supply Sergeant in the US Marine Corps. After his service in WWII, Martin returned to Philadelphia where he met and married the love of his life, Jean Coleman.
Martin and Jean moved to Raleigh with their three children in 1964, after purchasing Carolina Food Products Company, a wholesale snack food distribution business. With the help of his family and valued employees, he built his business from three to as many as twenty-five sales routes before selling it in 1994.
Martin was devoted to his immediate and extended family. Every family member knew that they could count on his unwavering support, and he never disappointed them. Active in his community, he was a longtime member of Beth Meyer Synagogue, and served on its Board of Trustees. In 1983, Martin proudly helped carry the Sifrei Torah from the synagogue on W. Johnson Street to Beth Meyer's new home on Newton Road. He was always generous when called upon to contribute to the well-being of the Raleigh Jewish community. Martin was also a longtime member, and past President, of The Exchange Club of Raleigh. He was committed to the club's work in support of the prevention of child abuse, and the children of the Oxford Orphanage.
Martin is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Schwartz; children Edele Cruse (Steve), Nancy Libman (David), and Barry Schwartz (Ricki); grandchildren Brian Cruse, Dana Libman, Stephanie Schmidt (Ben), Emily Phelps (Mark), Jeremy Schwartz, and Justin Schwartz.
In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Belferman, and brothers Louis and Samuel Schwartz.
A funeral service will be held Monday, November 5, 2:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh. Interment will follow at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.
Donations may be made to The Jewish Federation of Raleigh-Cary, 8210 Creedmoor Road, Suite 104, Raleigh, NC 27613.
