Max Harris Obituary
August 2, 1925 - February 19, 2022
Cary, North Carolina - Max Emerson Harris, 96, lately of Cary, NC, died Saturday, February 19, 2022. The family will receive family and friends at 10:00 am, Saturday, February 26 at Thomas Funeral Home in Fuquay-Varina, followed by a memorial service in the chapel. Max was born August 2, 1925 in Candor, NC. He grew up on his parents farm where the main crops were peaches and tobacco. He graduated from Candor High School in 1943. He was drafted into the Navy in 1944. After a year of training, he joined PT Boat Squadron 27 in the Phillipines.
After his discharge following WWII, he attended Wake Forest College, now Wake Forest University, graduating in 1951 with a BS degree in Chemistry. After graduating, he married Patsy Honeycutt of Fuquay-Varina and accepted a job at Vanderbilt Research Lab in Norwalk, CT. After three years, the couple relocated to Kinston, NC where he worked as a research chemist at DuPont. He earned two patents for techniques of spinning the polyester fiber known as Dacron. In Kinston, he and Patsy raised their family of two daughters. He was a devoted family man. After his retirement, they moved to Fuquay-Varina. Max enjoyed playing golf many times a week until he was 91 years old and also enjoyed playing bridge and poker. He was active in the Fuquay-Varina Methodist Church.
Max lost his beloved wife, Patsy Honeycutt Harris, in 2006 from cancer. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Guy Phillip and Fannie Copeland Harris, 3 older brothers, Roy Leonard Harris, Guy Phillip Harris Jr., and Ralph Copeland Harris and 2 older sisters, Lucille Harris Owen, and Ruth Harris Gruber.
Max is survived by 2 daughters who had the best daddy a girl could have, Monica Shelton of Cary , NC and Allison Johnson of Clayton, NC; 2 granddaughters, Sarah Shelton (Andres Arana) of Cambridge MA and Anna Shelton of Chapel Hill, NC and many nieces and nephews.
