Maxine Fitch Obituary

Maxine Virginia Dorn Fitch, 90, died peacefully August 29, 2007, at UNC Hospitals.
She was born May 4, 1917, in Mitchell Co., TX, and was always proud of her Texas heritage. After attending Texas Tech, she moved to Washington D.C., where she worked for the U.S. Government. There she met and married Miles McPherson Fitch, who worked for the National Archives. After a few years they moved to Mebane, NC to join the family business, Fitch Lumber Company. When fire destroyed the Mebane location of the lumber company in 1945, Maxine and Miles moved to Chapel Hill, to work at the branch that had been opened in Carrboro in 1923.
Maxine was an active volunteer in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area for over 50 years-PTA, Scouts, Junior Service League, Chapel Hill Appearance Commission, Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, United Methodist Women, to name a few. She was an active member, in all aspects, of University United Methodist Church and P.E.O., Chapter AG. "Mom Fitch's" favorite hobby was her family - she loved hosting her children and grandchildren with her home cooked meals. She enjoyed crafts, specifically painting in oils and watercolors, creating stationery, and sewing.
She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years.
Survivors include her children, Betsy Fitch Benton (Clyde), of Norfolk, VA, Miles (Mac) McPherson Fitch Jr. (Emmy), of Chapel Hill, NC, Carol Fitch Walker (Jim), of Chapel Hill, NC; ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Maxine's life will take place Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 2:00 p.m., at University United Methodist Church.
The family will receive visitors immediately following the service, in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to University United Methodist Church P.O. Box 728, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514 or a charity of your choice.
The family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Mitchell Wilson and the staff at UNC Hospitals, as well as caregivers from Home Health Solutions and Amedisys Home Health, Inc.

Iwould not be who I am without my past with Maxine and Carol. She was my Mom when my mom passed away. She was my strength whe I had no strength. She was my Mom when I had no Mom. No matter that the time passed and there was no communication...she and Carol will always be my best friends...no matter how much time goes by

Maxine was a fine, Christian lady. I was very fortunate to have lived in her home from 1990-1995. She became like a second mother to me and made me a part of her wonderful family.
I will miss her terribly.
