Nathaniel Green Obituary
Nathaniel Adam Green, 48, died July 28, 2025 in San Diego, CA.
Survivors are his mother Jane, stepfather Ben, sister Alison, nieces: Zella, Liza Jane,& Louisa, nephew Benji, their father Geoff, a close knit extended family including aunts Lenore, Sande, & Jill, his deceased father David & uncle Ned, a former stepfather Peter, & numerous cherished friends from every walk of life. All loved him & love him still.
Saltwater was in his DNA: his earliest known ancestor on his mother's side washed ashore on the Outer Banks after a shipwreck in 1837 & stayed on to become the first school teacher in Hatteras. His son was awarded a congressional gold medal for lifesaving. Legend has it that Adam's great grandfather, a telegraph operator for the Hatteras Weather Bureau, received the first SOS signal from the sinking Titanic. A natural born athlete, Adam loved & excelled in many sports, but his true passion was surfing. He was fearless riding the waves, exhilarated & always more serene in the water than on land.
Disenchanted from his personal experience, he felt that the rehab system was broken, sometimes putting profit before healing patients it claimed to serve. Adam earned a masters degree to counsel others who had substance abuse. He worked to combat the negative stigma held toward addiction that created isolation, & hoped to convince his clients & the public that this chronic disease with its cycling recovery & relapse was not a moral failure, but instead a treatable condition.
To the end Adam was insistently himself, living life at full volume, his outlook unconventional, his sense of humor irreverent, humble about his shortcomings, unfaltering in his devotion, & forever animating our lives. His choices impacted those who loved him as much as himself. When his strength gave out, he drifted away from us out of reach,& paddles just beyond the horizon, riding waves in a sea where there is no suffering, no shame...only peace.
In our small corner of the world may we bravely move forward, our hearts broken wide open to the ambiguity, complexity, enduring love, & goodness within this vast, messy, precious thing we call life.
While arrangements for a Raleigh observance are pending, all are welcome to join us in remembering Adam at 11 a.m. September 13 at WindSong, our family cottage: 355 Ocean Blvd. W., Holden Beach, NC 28462.
