Nettie Haywood Reid

Nettie Reid Obituary

Nettie Haywood Reid, 92, died Monday evening at Penick Village in Southern Pines, where she had resided for the last six years. Born in Raleigh in 1916, she was the daughter of William Grimes and Nettie Dockery Haywood.
Her husband, the late Paul Apperson Reid, was President of Western Carolina College (now University) in Cullowhee for 21 years. Prior to her marriage, she was the assistant for a number of years to Dr. Carey Bostian, Chancellor of North Carolina State College (now University).
She was a graduate of the Roberts-Beach Preparatory School in Catonsville, MD. and Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA. She also attended Katharine Gibbs School in Boston, MA.
She was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the National Association of Colonial Dames in the State of North Carolina, the Junior League of Raleigh, the Johnsonian Book Club, and the Modern Minerva Book Club, a group of friends who have met regularly since its founding about 1930, nearly 80 years ago.
Mrs. Reid is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry D. Haywood of Raleigh; her nieces and nephew, Alice Haywood Robbins of Pinehurst, Frances Haywood Bullock of Greensboro, Henry Dockery Haywood, Jr. and Nancy Grimes Haywood, both of Raleigh, Sarah Haywood McInnis of Little River, SC; four great nephews, Phillip Wayne Robbins, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA, Henry Haywood Robbins of New York City, Frank William Bullock III of Greensboro, John McLeod McInnis III of Little River.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Christ Episcopal Church with burial following at Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry D. Haywood, 2502 Lewis Farm Road, Raleigh.
It is requested that flowers be omitted but that any remembrances be directed to Penick Village, PO Box 2001, Southern Pines, NC 28388 or Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 25778, Raleigh, NC 27611.
