Norman Weinstein, aged 87, passed away on June 26 at 9pm. He was surrounded by his wife of 62 years Deborah and his three children Rachel, Emily and Jonathan and his beloved grandchildren Madeline and Amelie.

He was an adventurer and a poet and his life affected many. His marriage was not only long lasting but it was true love. He and his wife shared a lifetime of memories and adventures that most people could only imagine. Norman was blessed with an encyclopedic knowledge on such a wide range of topics that it boggled the mind. He was a political activist with an unwavering moral compass and contributed and actively participated in many liberal causes. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, receiving the WWII Victory Medal.

His family lived in Greece and in France where he taught in both countries. He was considered by many to be a great teacher and he affected many people in a very positive way. He took chances and never took the easy way out. He was a prolific writer but never sought to be commercial. As testament to his remarkable drive and determination, just weeks before his death he published his latest writings, a beautiful book of 47 poems. This work occupied him to the end and he was so proud of what he was able to accomplish in spite of failing health.

Norman and his wife recently moved to North Carolina from New York City only a year and a half ago. However, in such a short time and at such an advanced stage of life, as with all their 20-some moves, they were able to integrate themselves into the community. He was vocal, extremely verbal and fiery and fought for what he believed tooth and nail. He will be missed by many but most of all his wife and his children and grandchildren.
