Nurry Dodge Obituary

Nurry Ann Nixon Dodge

September 20, 1928 - September 7, 2017

Raleigh

Nurry Ann Nixon Dodge, 88, passed away peacefully in her home in the presence of her family on September 7th, 2017. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Robert Jacqueline Dodge, her parents Nurry and Leland Nixon and daughter in law Christine Miller Dodge. Everyone that knew her will miss her ever present, infectious smile, her loving ways, and generous spirit. Nurry loved everyone and thought up nice things to do for us all.

She was proud to say she was born in Raleigh at the first Rex Hospital located in downtown Raleigh. She attended Hayes Barton Grammar School, now Underwood Elementary, Needham Broughton High School, and earned her Bachelor's degree from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now UNCG. Nurry taught briefly after college, worked as a proof reader for the Supreme Court of North Carolina, and stayed at home to raise her three sons. She was very social and loved to spend time with family and friends. Nurry was a member of several bridge clubs, Pinewood Garden Club, DAR, the Woman's Club of Raleigh, and her church circle at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was a longtime member. Having lived in her neighborhood since starting their family, Nurry and Bobby enjoyed strong friendships with their neighbors, some more than 50 years.

Surviving Nurry are her sons, Robert Nixon "Nick" Dodge, James McAllister "Mac" Dodge and his wife Peggy-Sue, David Williams "Will" Dodge and his wife Elizabeth; granddaughters, Erin Killmon and her husband, Zak, Hillary Evans and her husband, Jacob, Nurry Leigh Dodge, McAllister Junker and her husband, Adam, Mary Catherine and Ann Dodge; and great grandchildren Alice and Tara Evans, and Erich and Tyler Junker.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 12th, 5:30-7:30 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 13th, 2:00pm at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh. Internment will be private at Raleigh Memorial Park. I am so sorry to learn of Nurry's passing. I am the daughter of Alice Spencer Stone who was Nurry's best friend for many years. She called her Alice Dunn. I was able to visit Nurry last year when I traveled to NC to see my Aunt Evelyn. I enjoyed her reminiscing about my mother, who passed away a few years ago.

There are not enough superlatives to fully describe Nurry, but above all else she was a warm, kind, wonderful lady truly full of life. She was like a second mother to me during college and I am forever grateful and feel blessed having known her. Our deepest sympathies go out to all her family whom she cherished greatly. Everyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with Nurry will miss her, but we will always cherish the memories of her.

Mrs. Dodge was a mom to all of us that grew up on Merrie Rd. Even many years later, she would come up and ask about my parents and children. We will hold memories of her close to our hearts. I hope you find peace in your memories and the love that you shared.

To the family of Nurry Ann Dodge from Towny Bailey Crutchfield. Nurry Ann was like a sister to me as we lived across the street from each other on Creston Road. We continued that close relationship over the years. We visited each other frequently, watching each other's children grow and prosper. We shared a trip to Scotland. Our thoughts and prayers area with this family sharing your loss. With love, Towny and Doug Crutchfield
