R. Leon O'Briant
August 20, 1934 - April 24, 2013

R. Leon O'Briant died on the evening of Wednesday April 24 after a brief illness. He was born in Greenville, SC, resided in Raleigh, NC for most of his adult life and had lived in Mebane, NC since 2007. He had two years of honorable service in the US Army in the 1950's and was a graduate of East Carolina University. He retired as a supervisor of corporate out-of-state tax auditors for the NC Department of Revenue.
He enjoyed reading and studying history and he was also an avid collector of antiques, specializing in the restoration of early electric clocks. He was beloved by family and friends for his generosity, kindness, wit and his gift of story-telling. He is survived by his son James, daughter-in-law Janete, brother Guerry and sisters Alene Thomas and Linda Justice.
A viewing will be held at Walker's Funeral Home (919-942-3861) at 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, to be followed by cremation.

Leon never failed to be a good, steadfast, and loyal friend. He was a good man. He touched my life in many kind and generous ways, and no doubt the lives of many others. I'm a far better person for having had the distinct privilege and honor to have known him. I will miss him.
