My deepest regards to the family of the late Rueben Fox Canady. He was dear friend to me and my deceased wife, Doris Hughes Pack. I was just looking to try to reconnect with him after being out of touch for so long. He will be greatly missed by me and my sons Christian and Jason. He was a great encourager to them, whom they called "Uncle Rueben". I thank God for the time we had him in our lives.

Reuben appeared in a dream of mine last night after many years, and I was saddened to learn he had passed away just last year. He was my friend, my favorite teacher, my mentor, and I agree his art room at NEHS was indeed a sanctuary where he made everyone feel welcome. A true artist and a lovely human being who will be missed.

I'm so sad to hear of Mr. Cannady's passing. He was a kind and talented art teacher. I was privileged to be his student at Northeast from the first year of the school's opening until my graduation. Because of his
inspiration, I went on to study art myself. God Bless You, Mr. Cannady

Just heard of the passing of Reuben. I am deeply saddened and pause to remember what he did for me as a teacher at Northeast High School. His art room/class was a sanctuary to all of us who loved art and self expression as much as he did. His encouragement and faith in those of us who needed special guidance was legendary. He sheltered a lot of us kids from the turbulent times of youth and offered a safe haven to those of us who were the square pegs, the misunderstood, the rag tag misfits and lastly the artists who took strength from having a place to finally fit in. A place where we could go every day and it all made sense. He taught us much more than art. He gave us the freedom of being ourselves, but even sweeter was the acceptance he gave to us, unconditionally. I will never forget him as an artist, as a friend and teacher. I am still am artist and think of him often while I work and I thank him for his lessons. Both in art and life. God bless you Reuben Cannady and I am sure that wherever you are now is so much more beautiful because you showed up.

O my! Although Reuben and I kept in contact over the years and I would stop by to see him occasionally during my visits to North Carolina, I did not know he had passed. Wow! I remember those garden tours and the beautiful family homestead. Indeed, he was an artist in more ways than one. What a caring teacher he was! He had a way with students that no other teacher could have. Mr. Cannady was true. What one saw one got. Indeed, I will miss my dear Northeast High School colleague and friend.

Reuben Fox Cannady was my friend. He started off as my Art Teacher at Northeast High School in 1971 and quickly became someone I admired and cherished. Reuben encouraged me in many types of art but mentored me in pottery. He was such an open-hearted, caring, thoughtful, funny and loving person. Reuben had a gift of making everyone feel special. He gave a sanctuary to all of the kids in school that felt like misfits and encouraged them to try to find themselves. He was an amazing teacher, but he was an incredible person in my eyes. I visited Reuben about 2 years ago after not seeing him for about 25 years. It was if there had never been a gap. Same old Reuben! Loving, caring, funny. I wish I had seen him one more time, but I'll definitely have to still visit a person that meant so much to me and helped shape my life. My heart goes out to his family and friends. You have lost someone special and all of us that knew him have lost the same. I will hold you in my heart Reuben. He helped shape my life and the world would be better with more people like you...your friend, Dan Campbell

Dear Rueben, RIP.You were my favorite teacher in high school. You were my inspiration.

Uncle Reuben was the best uncle a person could ask for. He was talented not only with a paint brush, but in the yard as a flower gardener too. His love for people, especially children is unmatched. Reuben will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace dear Reuben and know you will always be loved.

Reuben was a very talented, creative, thoughtful neighbor. His smile and constant joy on Gregory Manor will be sorely missed. All the Cannadys, Ijames, and family are in both my thoughts and prayers.
