Robert Giggey Obituary

Robert Giggey

November 23, 1947 - November 7, 2024

Durham, North Carolina - Robert Giggey, 76, died on Sunday, November 7, at Huntington Commons in Kennebunk, Maine. Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1947, Bob grew up on military bases across the country. He considered Maine his home state, although he lived for more than 30 years in North Carolina.

His experience as a medic in Vietnam shaped his professional career. He completed his training at Howard University and became one of the first physician assistants in the state of Maine. He spent his early career at Franklin Memorial Hospital and moonlighting across rural Maine. He retired as a faculty member from Duke University Hospital.

He loved golfing, flying, and spending time at the family cottage on Great Diamond Island in Portland. Most of all, he loved to share experiences with his family and friends.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary (Meissner) Giggey; and sister, Carolyn. He is survived by his wife, Evangeline; his girls, Kate (Scott), Abby (Jacob), and Annie (Michael); and grandchildren Logan, Caraline, Amelia, Eva, Atticus, and Owen. He will be missed by his many close friends who were like family to him.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, November 10th from 12-2 p.m. with a service from 2-2:30 p.m. at Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. To view Robert's memorial page, or to share an online condolence, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.

I am so sad to see this news. Bob and I shared some great times together before I moved to Texas. He walked my wife Debra down the aisle at our wedding in 2005. We loved to take golf trips in the Cessna together and he taught me how to fly. He loved his family dearly. RIP my friend.

Bob was a man who touched many peoples lives with his love for family, golf and friends. He loved his golf trips and recalling the many people and stories that went along with them. He accepted his illness with courage, humor but never bitterness. Throughout the 30 years I knew Bob, his generous spirit made life better for all around him. For me, Bob was truly a great man, the world is now a lesser place with him gone, a fact I can barely accept. My condolences to Eve and family.

Bob was a very kind, generous, and welcoming person, with a zest for life and shared good times. I am very sad to learn of his suffering and passing, and for this great loss to his beloved family. I send my condolences. The memories will live on in those who had the great pleasure of his company and friendship. "To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die." (unknown)
