Robert Hedrick Obituary

Judge Robert Alfred Hedrick, age 86, of Raleigh died suddenly in his home Saturday July 18, 2009. He was born in Iredell County, NC on August 23, 1922 to Horace Edwin and Sarah Morrow Hedrick. From birth he was called “Fred” by family and friends. Judge Hedrick is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Patricia Owen Hedrick; his children: Jeffery Miles Hedrick and his wife Peggy Hedrick of Banner Elk, Martha Jean Hedrick McCarthy and her husband Dr. Francis McCarthy of Edenton, Joanna Rose Hedrick of Siler City, and John Alfred Hedrick and his wife, Tammy Combs Hedrick of Raleigh and seven grandchildren: Rachael, Jamie, Emma, Abby, Jacquelyn, Olivia, and Makenzie. He was preceded in death by his sister Clara Thomas and his brothers Philip, Paul, Harold, Jim, and Brown. Judge Hedrick attended the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh after losing his sight in 1936. He graduated from that school in 1943 and, in the fall of that year, entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1946. He then entered UNC’s law school, completing his three-year law course in 2 ½ years, graduating in 1949. While maintaining a civil law practice, he also served as prosecutor in Iredell County from 1950 to 1958. He was judge of Recorder’s Court in Statesville from 1958 until 1969 when he was appointed by Governor Bob Scott to the N.C. Court of Appeals. Fred remained on the court until his retirement on January 1, 1993. He held the position of Chief Judge of the Court between 1985 and 1993. Judge Hedrick had varied interests other than law. He was a licensed amateur radio operator. With a partner, he built and operated the Riverboat Robert E. Lee, a tourist attraction and charter boat operating on Lake Norman in the 1960's. He was a deacon in Concord Presbyterian Church in Statesville, NC as well as a elder in Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. He had a fine baritone singing voice, and was often asked to sing in community musicals, church services, and at funerals and weddings in Iredell County and beyond. He sang so frequently at such functions that Superior Court Judge John McLaughlin declared, “If Fred Hedrick didn’t sing at your wedding, you’re living in sin.” Judge Hedrick was an avid fisherman, both surf and deep sea, and was very knowledgeable about the waters out from Southport, NC to the gulf stream, so knowledgeable that his wife, Pat, confidently allowed him to be her navigator while she piloted their boat. Most importantly, Fred was a devoted husband to his wife, Pat, a wonderful father to his four children and an adoring grandfather of his eight grandchildren. Funeral service will be held 1:30 pm Wednesday at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow the service. Memorials may be sent to Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609 or North Raleigh Ministries, P.O. Box 19121, Raleigh, NC 27619-9121. Dear Pat and Family:

I worked with Fred during the Fifties and Sixteys as a State Trooper in Statesville. Fred, Myself, Lynn Nesbit, Bud Amburn and many others had some very good times during those years.I have followed Fred's career as a Lawyer, Solisator, Recorders Court Judge and onto the court of apeals. Fred Swore me in as a First Sergeant with the State Highway Patrol in 1975.He was a Dear Freind to me ,my wife and daughter. He and my daughter had frequent contact when she worked in the Governor Hunt administration. He will always be in our hearts and memory. May God bless you and your family in this great loss.

Although we did not personally know Judge Hedrick, we have been touched by his contribution for a better world - his son John Hedrick. When we read the life story of Judge Hedrick, we thought of the strength and commitment it took by himself, his parents, and others, to achieve his accomplishments, against the odds. We are fortunate to benefit indirectly from the teaching and values that he has passed on. Our hope is that his story will be captured in film to reach others globally. It is certainly a life story to inspire others.

Pat and family, I will always cherish the time I spent with Judge Hedrick as his legal assistant during 1958-1961. He was truly a remarkable person and I learned more than a life time's worth of legal knowledge. His dog Piper (I believe during that time) was always a companion to me as well as him. As a young Scotts High Graduate he chose me to work for him and I am forever grateful that he helped set my life on the right track. Additionally, as I married in 1966 he sang at our wedding. One of my daughters is an attorney in Raleigh and she also had the privilege of knowing Judge Hedrick as my former employer and also through the appeals court. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this difficult time but hope the fond memories will sustain you. He certainly had a wonderful sense of humor and a fairness to all in his work.

To Mrs. Pat Hedrick and other members of the Hedrick Family:
My wife (Shirley) and our older son, Judge Henry Frye, Jr. join in expressing condolences upon the death of Judge Hedrick. Each of us has fond memories of the Judge. I also remember that he was a great person to talk to about running for office, who would win, and why! Mrs. Hedrick, if Shirley will put up with me until August 25th, we will also have been married for 53 years! May the pleasant memories of the times spent in his presence inspire, encourage and sustain you and us in the days ahead.

I will never forget the wonderful memories created during the four years I worked for Judge Hedrick as his Legal Assistant. He was like a father to me; a father away from home. From the moment I picked him up in the morning to the moment I dropped him off at his house in the afternoon, I enjoyed every moment laughing at his wonderful sense of humor, learning everything from bits of law to "I know exactly what's wrong with your car Laura Lee", as well as singing along with him. Judge Hedrick will always remain in my heart. My prayers go with his wonderful wife Pat and the family. May God give you all peace and rest during this time of grief.

One of the best years of my life is when I worked as Judge Hedrick’s law clerk; he essentially gave me my first job out of law school, and thereafter helped me get my first job in private practice, and I am grateful for all of that; working in his office was a great experience, and he was a true character. I have also gotten to know other members of his family, especially fellow lawyers Jeff and John, who are fine testimonials for their father. Please accept my condolences.

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathy in this time of great loss. In reading your father's obituary, it is clear that he was an exceptional human being and a valued member and pillar of the community, and most expecially a devoted husband and father.

The Judge was a great fishing companion, but sometimes deliberately mixed up one's name with professional baseball players. I'll miss his cooking advice too. Craig Stokes (not Roger Craig)
