Robert Rabun Obituary

Robert Scott Rabun, 49, was a native Atlanta and proud of it. He grew up in Sandy Springs, attending Riverwood High School and St. John Methodist Church. Scott was an avid sportsman; he loved fishing, hunting dove with his father and brothers, and all team and individual games. He was one of the first to race down the Chattahoochee, and first ran in the Peachtree Road Race in 1976.
Scott also loved music; he instilled these talents and passions in his daughter Alyssa, and would have loved to have done the same for son Ryan.
He began his college career at Furman University, in South Carolina, and returned home to receive his BA in Business from Georgia State University. During college, Scott worked hard while he was in school. He was Asst. Food and Beverage manager at the downtown Atlanta Hilton. He trained as a chef under the direction of Chef Paul of Pano & Paul's restaurant.
Scott and Virginia Ebner were married in Atlanta in 1981. Scott was with Agfa-Gevaert, rising rapidly to the top. They moved to St. Petersburg, FL. Scott was drawn to the water all his life and preferred to live as close as possible to a beach. After a few years the apple of his eye, the beautiful, intelligent, and oh so talented, Alyssa Rene Rabun arrived.
Scott left Agfa, and went into the medical arena. This necessitated a move to Chapel Hill, NC.
Scott and Virginia, though no longer together, moved separately to the same area to facilitate the caring and shared custody of their daughter. Scott was a member of Christ Church in Southern Village. In 2001 Scott adopted a son, Ryan Raymond Rabun, from the Ukraine. Scott died February 17, 2006.
He is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Rene Rabun, of Winter Park, FL, Oviedo, Spain, and Excelsior, Michigan; his son, Ryan Raymond Rabun, of Pittsboro, NC. Also, surviving are his parents, L. Walton Rabun, Jr. and Barbara Carpenter Rabun of Alpharetta, GA; his siblings, Jeanne Rabun, of Alpharetta, GA, Lee W. Rabun, III, of Alpharetta, GA, Barbara Rabun, of Portland, OR, Romy Rabun, of Atlanta, GA, and Clay S. Rabun, of San Francisco and LA, CA. He left a nephew, Robert Declan Rabun; two nieces, Natalie Marie Rabun and Emily Amanda Rabun, Many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
He will be in our hearts everyday and will be greatly missed.
At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in the name of Scott Rabun, to the Cue Center for Missing Persons, PO Box 12714, Wilmington, NC 28405.

Scott and I knew each other since the 2nd grade. We laughed and joked a lot. His smile was very contagious. I could always count on Scott to be there with a kind word and smile. An angel on Earth. He was a gift to all who knew him. My prayers to his family.

Dear Rabun Family;

There are no words to describe how sorry I am for your loss. I considered Scott one of my dearest and closest friends and will forever treasure the memories I have of his vibrant spirit...and will forever feel blessed for the enormous impact he made in my life. I want you all to know that Scott never missed an opportunity to express his love, pride and gratitude to his family for your loyalty and support you always expressed to him. He loved his children more than anything, and coudn't help but flash this big, enormous smile everytime he spoke of them and their recent accomplishments. Alyssa, you were his HERO. Your dad was in awe of you....and expressed to me over and over again just how amazing you are, how much he loved you, and how much he learned from watching you flourish with each and everything you accomplished in your life. He is and will forever be, so proud of you. To his family and sister Jeanne...he felt your love and support. He did. We spoke of the wonderful blessing he had in you as a family many times. Upon returning from his last visit home on Christmas...he shared with me that the love and support he felt from you all on that visit meant the world to him and he felt so comforted by everyone during this difficult time in his life, and was so grateful for each and everyone of you. To Scott's parents...you raised an incredibly loving and truly wonderful human being that we will all miss so much. I thank you for the gift of Scott in my life. I pray for peace and healing in all of your hearts at this time...I know that is what Scott would want to. My prayers are with you.

Sincerely;

Karen Riojas

To the Scott family,

I, like several of the people writing here, went to high school with Scott. I was a few years younger than him, and I always looked up to guys like Scott, Spencer and Tom. They all set great examples to follow. My prayers and the prayers of my family are with you.

Scott: Although we never had the same circle of friends, you always shared a smile with me each and every day when we passed in the halls. That small "gift of life" you gave to me is my memory of you -- for you made me feel special when you acknowledged me with that smile...

If your ears can burn in heaven, Scott’s certainly are. His high school classmates have been reminiscing this week about Scott’s warm personality, talent, humor, and athletic ability. It’s especially hard to lose a friend without having the opportunity to tell him how highly we thought of him, but I want you, his family, to know that he was very much loved by his high school classmates, who are now mourning his loss with you.

Sometimes we take old friends for granted, knowing they’ll always be there when we “have time” to spend on the simple things of life; once we’re finished competing in the rat race of earning a living, raising a family, dealing with life’s little crises. And with many of us now living in different states, some even in different countries, we’ve lost touch with each other even though we still feel that extraordinary bond in our hearts.

We feel your sorrow; in our own absentee way, we loved him too. So I hope you’ll take comfort in knowing that Scott’s legacy lives on in our memories and our light hearted conversations. Your loss is our loss.

From the Riverwood High School class of ‘74,

Mike Anderson

Scott taught me to shoot layups in the Rabun driveway. The original Rubber Band Man, he had a great sense of humor. Memories of your family and home and Scott trying to blow out gag-candles on a frosted sponge cake (the sponge was the kind you wash cars with) in the carport will be with me always. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Rabun family: Scott... what a prince of a person! When I began teaching at Sandy Springs High (1971), I met Scott & the Rabun family. He was so courteous; such a fine young gentleman, such a GREAT smile and sense of humor, and a wonderful loving family.My thoughts and prayers are with Scott and the whole family. Maxwell Calloway

To all who adored and loved Scott,

There are so many fond family memories from Willow Avenue to Sandy Springs of Scott and his infectious smile. His life remains a blessing to all. Uncle Bob, Aunt Francis, Uncle Julian, Aunt Odessa, Uncle Gene, Aunt Marie and all the other Carpenters before him, must of have been celebrating in Heaven over his arrival. What a barbeque they must have put on.

All Rabuns are in our prayers. God bless each of you in these sad times.

I've replayed mental videos of the most wonderful memories from high school all week long. Scott was a dear friend and though we didn't stay in touch regularly, when I did see him, it seemed like no time had passed whatsoever. My thoughts and prayers are with Rabun family.

Dear Rabun Family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Scott. He was a leader in everything he did. We worked hard together on the football field and had fun growing up as the upper class at Riverwood for 10th, 11th and 12th grades. I feel blessed to have had Scott as a friend and welcome his hug when I see him in heaven. We will keep your family in our prayers. Love, Tom Raney & Family

All week I have been carrying the news of Scott's death in a very heavy and saddened heart. Though I did not stay in contact with Scott after our graduation from Riverwood, I remember him fondly --always with a ready smile. Today I cannot imagine words are much comfort. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family and that Scott will be remembered in highest regard by all who knew him. Wishing you comfort and peace.
