Stephen Mullen Obituary

Stephen Thomas "Steve" Mullen, Sr.
New Bern
Mr. Stephen Thomas "Steve" Mullen, Sr., 77, passed away Wednesday, June 5, 2013 following a courageous battle with bladder cancer. Steve was born on Old Cherry Point Road on August 26, 1936 to Julia Boyd Mullen and John G. Mullen. He was a graduate of New Bern High in 1954, and went on to get his Electrical Engineering degree from NC State in 1958. After college, Steve worked at USMC Base Cherry Point, Dept of Navy Civil Service. In 1966, he joined Lockheed Corp in Marietta, GA. In 1969, the US Navy recruited him to Naval Air Engineer Center in Philadelphia, PA, and in 1976, Steve was instrumental in moving NAEC to Lakehurst, NJ, where he was Systems Engineering Branch Head.
In 1992, Steve, and the love of his life, Arleen, moved back to his New Bern home, on his beloved Neuse River. Although traveling around the world together, they always felt at home on the river. In his retirement, Steve was an active member of Riverdale United Methodist Church, Eastern North Carolina Genealogical Society, a charter member of the East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club, US Army National Guard, Doric Lodge # 568 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, and unselfishly served his country in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for 19 years. He was the Flotilla Commander of the New Bern Flotilla in 2004, Boat Crew training Coordinator, QE Sector, NC, and many other positions. Steve was known as an honest man of the highest integrity. He loved to fish anywhere and anytime, yet his greatest joy was being a father and grandfather.
Funeral services for Steve will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Riverdale United Methodist Church. Burial, with Masonic Rites and National Guard honors, will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-7:30 PM, Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Pollock~Best Funeral Home and other times at the family home. Those wishing to offer words of hope and condolences may visit www.pollockbest.com. Memorials, in Steve's name, may be made to Riverdale UMC 5195 US Hwy 70 E New Bern, NC 28560.
Steve is survived by his wife of 54 years, Vera "Arleen" Lloyd Mullen; children, Steve Mullen, Jr. and Lea Barney, of Knightdale, NC; John "Mark" Mullen, and wife Cammy, of Wake Forest; Anita Mullen, of New Bern, NC; Robert Mullen, of Harrisburg, NC; and his sister, Helen Mullen Ellis, of Springfield, OH. He also leaves behind his dear grandchildren, Lindsey, Kevin, Matt, and Mason Mullen; and many cousins far and near.
The Mullen Family would like to give their heartfelt appreciation to Coastal Carolina Cancer Center, Craven County Home Health & Hospice, and all the medical staff that worked so hard in his care.
Pollock~Best Funerals & Cremations is entrusted with the Mullen Family.

May 18, 1987 – That's the day Steve Mullen hired me to be his Secretary at NAVY Lakehurst. Even after 26 years, his guidance has been instrumental in helping me become the NAVY employee I am today. Always encouraging and honest and insightful - his advice to “never say you can't” do whatever task was asked of me has helped me experience more than I ever imagined. For that and many other slices of wisdom I am grateful. I believe he will be fine with the Greatest Fisherman of All, and offer my prayers and condolences to Arlene and his children, grandchildren and anyone else he came to know. He will be missed. God Bless - -

Steve was one of the first supervisors I worked for at Navy Lakehurst. Although I was just starting my career, and he was ending his, I always remember Steve as being kind, and willing to give his insight to me. I also remember his friendly disposition and his smile. I still have a picture of him with me at his retirement party. He was so happy to be going back home, and he was blessed to have such a great family to be with in his retirement. I pray for his family during this difficult time.

Haven't seen Steve since he retired from Lakehurst but I was very fond of him. He was a true southern gentleman. My condolences to you Arleen and your family.

Not sure if our earlier submission was recorded so, if this is a repeat, please accept our apologies. Steve was a great guy and a genuine patriot. He was also one of our first friends in NC when we moved here 16 years ago through the CG Auxilliary. He made us smile and was a true friend. He believed in his God, his family and his country. God bless him and all of those who loved him.

Steve was a very close friend. He was like a brother to me, of witch I never had. We fished and visited together like family and he always was great to be around. We had many enjoyable times. He cared for family and friends like myself and my wife Joyce. We will miss him very much and I lost my friend. I think there will be a place in heaven for to fish as well.

Please let us know if we can be of any assistance at all to you and may God be with all of you during this time.
