Walter Eck Obituary
87 years
Durham
Dr. Walter Edward Eck, Jr., age 87, passed away from heart failure on November 25, 2017 in Durham, North Carolina. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Eck earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a veteran, having served in the Army Medical Corps and reaching the rank of Captain. Dr. Eck practiced family medicine for more than 35 years, mostly in Southern California. He was a respected physician who served as Chief of Staff at both Northridge Hospital in Los Angeles and Mountain's Community Hospital in Lake Arrowhead, California. His later years in medicine were spent as a Medical Director at Cigna HealthCare in Southern California. Dr. Eck was active in the church. He served as a deacon at Community Baptist Church in Lake Arrowhead and led various groups at both St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California and later at Duke University Chapel in his retirement home of Durham, North Carolina. On a personal level, Dr. Eck had a charming wit and a generous spirit. He was well-loved by his patients, family and friends. He will surely be missed.
Dr. Eck is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Marion Bright Eck; sister Nancy Walter of Cleveland, Ohio; sons David Eck and John Eck of Durham, North Carolina; daughter Catherine Mueller of Santa Ana, California and grandchildren: Bryan Eck, Robbie Lewis, Jennifer Mueller Robins, Cameron Eck and Christopher Eck. He is predeceased by his son Walter Edward "Chip" Eck, III.

The Tucker family has fond memories of Dr. Eck from our Lake Arrowhead days. His name came up in conversation tonight, as it has many times before. I was sick a lot as a kid, and he was always kind, wise and comforting. I'm grateful to have had him as a doctor.
